Undergraduate engineer Review

Learning about fundamental engineering concepts whilst applying them in the mechanical, electronical, software and new product innovation sectors through 6 month rotations. In the workplace, we practice theoretical background that we have learnt on lecture days by trying to incorporate it into the challenging problems we are given at work.

Yes, I have learnt how to design parts using 3D online software, this helped me develop my iterative prototyping skills in which I first sketched a part with pencil, and then translated that sketch onto computer software. This was difficult to do at first as I had never done it to this much accuracy before.

I love my programme, it is very hard work and it can be very challenging due to the time scale in which the course is condensed into. The work days are very fun and are great to be able to practice what you are learning in the classroom too, basically the day after.

The programme is very well organised and it is structured so that the topics that we are learning in some modules, are being reiterated or practiced in other modules. This allows us to go over content we have learnt and use information or teaching to help us across the board.

There are great levels of support within this programme. Each undergrad has access to talk with a student support advisor regularly where they can talk about anything they like. We also are helped by an Academic tutor who has regular meetings with us to discuss our progress and any qualms we may have.

The support from the training provider is great and very consistent. We are offered extra help and teaching time from lecturers if we get stuck with problems or don't understand some of the teaching material. They make it very known that they are here to help us which is nice.

The degree content that we are learning is very relevant to what we are doing in the workplace. Obviously it is hard because as we are all working on different things within the workplace, they can't teach us the theoretical background of what everyone is doing at all times. But after the 4 years the degree material will help greatly.

There are loads of options of social activities and sports teams to join which is great. I was worried that I'd be too busy to do any extra activities after lectures/ work but there is a wide variety of trips that are run too. Trips are organised into Bristol, Bath, Cardiff etc.

Everyday is a new challenge, we are given very interesting and relevant projects which not only help with understanding the degree, but the degree helps to understand. The living situation with the Dyson Village that is offered is also a great bonus, and the general morale within Dyson is great.

I would say to apply if you are genuinely interested in engineering, it is very intense and you will do so much better if you have a passion for it. I would say to brush up on your mathematical fundamentals before coming, possibly even learning some Further Maths. I would start the application process early too.
