  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My given role is a maintenance engineer which involves me repairing and maintaining the plant to ensure production is maintained. On a day to day basis, I currently shadow the maintenance engineers on the shop floor and within the workshop. As time progresses I will be given more opportunity to work more independently or take on more responsibility.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Absolutely. I am a career changer, and this new apprenticeship role is in a completely different field. I have learned so much so far, from being in college as well as being on site at the factory. Some main skills that I have developed are: problem solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I genuinely look forward to coming into work and getting stuck in. No day is the same, and there is always something new to keep you engaged. I really enjoy the apprenticeship programme and would urge anyone considering applying for an engineering apprenticeship to just do it. You won't regret it!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • On site it is fantastic. The managers are on top of what we need to be doing and when, which makes me feel like there is less stress on my behalf as I am properly supported on site. In college, it was also structured well, but time constraints meant that some modules felt rushed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • So much! It is very obvious that they want us apprentices to do well. From supporting us with going to college with a food allowance etc. to regularly touching base with us to see where we are at with our college work and offering opportunities to develop skills/knowledge on the job.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I think it was fair, but as stated previously, the time constraints (which are understandable) meant that some modules felt rushed. However, the college use an online shared drive which we can access anywhere which details each module and contains resources for us to use, which is useful to aid our learning.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I definitely think that everything that I have learnt in college so far has boosted my abilities on site. We learnt about compliance which is essential to safe working, and has made me more aware of potential hazards and helped me to work safely. We also learned about how equipment should be used and how it works, so we are now able to use these pieces of equipment as part of our job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I think there is, but I have not had chance to look much into them. The thing is I have joined my apprenticeship during COVID so there hasnt been much talk of social activities, sports teams, or even professional work events. Once everything calms down I'm sure these extra-cirricular activities will be communicated to me.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Nestle to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have genuinely never loved a job as much as this. There is real opportunity to develop yourself and expand your network of communication through this apprenticeship. You also work alongside people who have a wealth of knowledge and have an aptitude for the field, so it is really easy to pick up what you need to know.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nestle?
  • I would recommend doing your homework on Nestle and what they stand for. There are also some youtube videos which Nestle have published which provide some good insight into the interview process. The application process can seem lengthy, but it is worth it. I would also recommend ensuring that you are relaxed for the assessment/interview day, as they are really enjoyable, and even if you dont get offered a position they are a great way to gain interview experience.
