Working in various teams in the company gaining experience and working along side other people. 3 days a week working in workplace teams or on various training and then 2 days a week are lectures conducted on site at the Dyson Institute on the campus. Have 3 rotations a year in multiple teams
I have had several opportunities to develop new skills in various aspects of engineering and other areas. Completing training courses in health and safety and chemical safety for working in labs. I have also conducted workshop training and developed mechanical skills on several machines. As for software there is a plethora of experience to be gained including MATLAB, COMSOL, CFD and more
I enjoy the programme overall, although some aspects are challenging and the workload is quite substantial at times. The opportunity to become embedded in workplace teams and be treated like an equal and exposed to a lot of exciting work is one of the best parts of it. Also the fact the course is all contained on site is nice and provides a good community feel.
The course is very well organised, there was introductions and training provided at the start. The tasks are tutored well and there is alwasy a lot of support available. The number of staff has expanded considerably since the start of the course and this has reflected well in the organisation.
There is a great deal of support from people in the workplace, I'd say this is one of the main benefits compared to other apprenticeships. The workplace teams make an effort to make things relevant to the uni course. People generally have a very positive attitude and make us feel welcome.
A lot of support is received and training is provided in the workplace whenever is possible. Teams are always keen to provide development areas and allow you to push for any courses you like. This is in the form of online training courses or resources or dedicated courses, as well as direct mentor ship from other people.
I think this qualification somewhat helps me to perform in my role although in general it in the workplace experience that betters prepares us for the work conducted in the workplace. I think it has still helped me feel more comfortable and given me wider exposure to other industry practices
Yes there is a lot of activities on offer. Personally I have enjoyed joining Bonsai club as well as a weekly touch rugby group that play both indoors in winter and outside in summer. There is also a full gym and sports hall available on site which is great to meet people as well.
Yes
It is a great course and provides a lot of opportunity for development and sets up for a great start to the career. We get a lot of experience in several teams and this allows us to choose what aspects of work are enjoyable and tailor our experience to this.
I would say that you have to be prepared for a lot of hard work and sacrifices. Time management is also very important as there is a lot of balls in the air so to speak as there is a lot to keep up with in order to perform well. However support is there if need be.
