I am training to become a service delivery engineer,my role is to provide service to customers in both the copper network and the fibre network, daily duties include providing cable from cbt to house then setting up the internal side, connecting the router and proving to the customer correct speeds and stability .
I had no previous experience in this field so have had to learn from the bottom , skills learned include climbing pole and terminating drop wire using the health and safety guidelines and rules , using equipment like Hand held testers to firstly find faults then rectify them.i have also developed my customer service skills to a high level
As its a completely new experience i find i am enjoying learning new skills daily ,i also enjoy not knowing what to expect from one day to the next as daily work is very varied. also the fact that i am learning on the job is great fun with the chance to develop and enhance said skills
I would say its very well organised, the fact that one week you are working in the field the next week you could be on a training course or in a workshop with other trainees learning as a group.it mixes up the training so you learn one week then go into the field the next performing whats been learned
there is support at every level , firstly with colleges ,always happy to take a call offering advice and help ,then patch leads helping to plan out jobs and the week ahead ,finally your manager is always available if you are struggling with tasks mental health or if you just need a pick me up chat .
the training provider has set out the training in a way where you help yourself ,there are extra learning sites to hone in on certain areas , help sites if you struggle in certain skills and contacts to speak to someone directly if needed ,i feel the set up is perfect for the training qualifications needed,
if successful the qualification will help give the confidence to go out into the work place and do your job to a high skill level in a safe manor utilising all of the course work on a daily basis. by the time the course is complete i am pretty sure ill have the confidence to do the above and enjoy it
the team i work with often get together for a social evening to swap stories and chat over a meal or a drink ,there are also various social and work chats that are always active with tips for the job or general chit chat , im sure there are other networking events but i am not involved with them
Yes
BT has given me the chance to try something new and gain a completely new skill set ,coming away from the program with a transferable skill . I am 53 years old and did not think these opportunities would be available to me . on applying BT said they pride themselves on diversity i seems they were telling the truth
if applying for BT go into the Interview with honesty use the program with an open mind and a thirst to learn . if someone like me at the age of 53 no previous telecoms or engineering skills can succeed then anyone can.trust in the program and trust in yourself ,the rest is easy .
