My job role is an electrical designer. On a day to day basis I am involved within an electrical design team and complete electrical based work. I do a variety of different jobs on a day to day basis and this can include individual jobs and group based jobs respectively.
I have learnt so many new skills whilst working as an electrical designer for the company. This includes electrical knowledge/skills and more. I have also learnt many new social skills such as communication, teamworking but also having responsibility for individual jobs and how i conduct my self on a day to day basis.
I have enjoyed the programme as an apprentice designer at the company. It has helped me learn a lot of new skills and become confident in the working environment. I feel that i am a useful asset to the team i am on and that the programme rewards me accordingly.
The programme is structured well. Starting off at college full time and then moving into the business once the first qualification has been complete. After that HNC qualification is optional to do which i have. The apprenticeship consists of plenty of reviews and courses that keep people up to date and well trained.
I receive plenty of support from my employer. Whether this be personal support such as safeguarding or work/educational support such as training courses and more. To add to that, support is also available throughout courses such as End point assessment/NVQ. Support when joining new teams and current teams is also available.
End point assessment support from EAL is adequate. Support from Furness college for the first year was good as it was full time and access to tutors was frequent. HNC was enough support to complete the course, working from home was difficult and support was less than learning at the college itself.
I believe that it helps to a certain extent. A lot of the learning is not relevant to my job but parts of the courses provide useful knowledge. Generic electrical knowledge can be useful but most of the time it was specific to one topic and will not be used in the workplace.
There are extra-curricular events/activities to be involved in. Some of these include apprentice council, STEM ambassadors and more. I have been to some STEM events during my time as an apprentice helping out at local schools and events. There aren't any sports teams/networking events that i am aware of.
Yes
The apprenticeship is a good experience and provides the skills to be a competent designer. There are plenty of opportunities to learn and decide your future. There are optional qualifications to complete which is an added bonus. The standard of work is good and the working experience overall is also good.
Apply for the job you feel will be most suitable to you. Be confident and work out how you would like yourself to come across first. Ensure to be proactive and have hobbies/commitments. Show a willingness to learn and push yourself to become better. Ensure to learn about the company prior to applying.
