  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an Apprentice Talent Coordinator, my role involves supporting the Talent Attraction, Early Careers and Talent Development teams in the delivery of the overall Talent Strategy. I provide important administrative and coordination support, which better enables the attraction and development of the best talent for Matalan. A key part of my role is ensuring the successful onboarding of new colleagues whilst maintaining a positive colleague experience.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am continually learning new skills that will support me in my Learning and Development L3 Qualification and my career at Matalan, such as my delivery techniques and how to best collate data. I also attended a two day course ran my Oakwood Training, which has now made me a Mental Health First Aider.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From a learning aspect Matalan is great. From the minute a candidate accepts an offer, we set them up an account on a learning platform which has hundred of resources on which they can access before they join and get to know about Matalan. All new colleague then go on to a company induction and have the opportunity to sign up to Masterclasses so that they can develop their skills and for their own personal development.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In all honestly, I couldn't ask for any more support from my team, my line manager and the wider HR Team. We have daily check ins and I know I can have 1-2-1 support with my line manager whenever I need. I feel that I can go to any of them with any problem and I would have their support which is important.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have 1-2-1 sessions booked in with my mentor from Lifetime. We usually meet every week or two weeks depending on my workload to discuss how I am getting on with my modules. Overall the support has been good and everything eventually gets answered. There is just the occasional time that I send a email and it won't get picked up for a few days but I understand how busy Lifetime are too.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the qualification is definitely supporting me to perform better in my role. It helps me think about how I can do things differently. It helps me look at my presenting techniques and how I can develop my skills. I have learnt a lot more about Learning and Development as an industry as it was all completely new to me before joining Matalan

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Head Office is definitely starting to perk up now. When I started it was still during the peak of Covid so over the last month or so I am seeing a lot of changes which I have been told this is what it was like pre pandemic. We are now seeing new vendors coming into Head Office on a weekly basis. We also have some mindfulness sessions coming up that have been arranged by our Wellbeing Team. The office is a great place to be social, with the weather starting to perk up too we are now eating our lunches on our picnic benches outside.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Matalan to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think Matalan is a great company to work for. Not only is there that family feel but their colleagues Wellbeing is high priority, which for me is extremely important after that last two years during the pandemic. It's great to be back in an office environment to be social but we also have the benefit of hybrid working which I think is a huge benefit.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Matalan?
  • The application process is really clear and all the roles are advertised on Matalan.jobs so I would advise taking a look on their. I would also have a look on our website as a whole and just get a feel of what type of company we are and what our values are and hopefully they match your. For interviews or assessment days, my advise is just to be yourself but show off your skills and let your interviewer know why you want to join our family!
