I work in a public library helping library users with any enquiries they have, processing stock and participating in outreach activities.
I have developed my existing customer skills and have developed my knowledge of the wider libraries and information services sector.
I enjoyed it very much as I found it very stimulating, but not too demanding in terms of work required so that I could easily carry on my day to day job alongside.
Unfortunately the syllabus had to be changed halfway through the course. While this was necessary, it effectively meant that I had to restart the course but still with the original end date. Consequently, the latter part of the course was rushed with not everything being covered.
My employer supported me by giving me enough time during the working week to complete my course assignments.
I did receive an hour's tutor session every four weeks but he was not always able to reply to my emails outside these sessions due to other commitments.
It does provide an excellent foundation of knowledge which my employer would not otherwise have provided me with.
Not that I am aware of, but to be honest these do not appeal to me anyway.

While the salary is obviously determined by the financial circumstances that local authorities have to work with, the fact that you are helping the public inspires me more.
Probably as with most employers, private or public sector, things do not always go according to plan. You will need patience and realism to work for a local authority but you will still have the chance to make a difference and actually see it around you.
