  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently the business manager of the restaurant. I oversee the running of the business. I deal with a lot of HR issues and at times I a complete disciplinaries in other restaurants to help and support them. I analyse weekly trends and create action plans to accompany them. I also promote good working practises and adhere to all legislation.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt to be a lot more confident in my abilities. You tend to get a lot of feedback from the university so any skills that I have developed have been picked up on and commented. I would like to be a little more organised but I have learnt how much better I am under pressure.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do really enjoy the programme. I like that my cohort is mixed so I get to share experience and knowledge from other organisations to give me a broader perspective. I like visiting the university in person and I like that the university promotes involvement and participation from classes. I also like meeting new people.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I'm general I think that it is well structured. I think that sometimes when we believe we have no clue as to what is going on it is more us not being proactive rather than the fault of the university. I would say though, I have asked for a timetable for next year a few times and haven't had that yet. It's more for my boss than me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer will sit in on my reviews and be a willing participant. In general when feedback is sought after it is given. On a day to day basis if I need something then I have to be proactive about it and it is my responsibility to check in with him if there is something not right

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Tutors are always very approachable and make themselves available to us should they need too. We have several support sessions throughout each unit and usually more than one tutor to go too. Failing that we have a lead for the programme should nobody else be available which is helpful. Happy days.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gives me the confidence that I need to further improve in my role. It lets me look at things academically which gives me a different perspective going forward. Sometimes in our organisation our way of working can be a little too structured so when approaching issues we can be limited in our approach.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Since covid we have had two networking events. One of them was the conference and the other was the promotion of the new mobile app. We have two big parties every year within our organisation and when there is a football tournament this is opened up to all restaurants. Some of the lads play football in their spare time together.

  • 9a. Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Mcdonalds has been a big part of my life and has always given opportunities that I never thought was possible. I never would have thought doing a degree was possible working with them especially as I am a little older and my role is full on. There are opportunities at every level.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
  • Make sure that you are firm with boundaries. Do not forget to have a working life balance. Sometimes you can get a little too involved in the work and in the restaurant so it is always important to take a break now and then. You get out of the job what you put in.
