I carry out analysis according to standard methods using a range of techniques such as HPLC, Dissolution, Water Content and UV readings. Additional to this, I get involved with development projects for certain project teams and carry out Method Validation and Development work for my specialised technique which is HPLC.
I have developed many skills, especially those which aren't as obvious, such as communication and networking through attending social events and working within a large team to complete tasks. I have also advanced my analytical skills significantly, making me more inquisitive and curious about the science that goes on around me.
I love the company culture due to the flexibility of working hours which suits my busy lifestyle. Prior to working in a research based company before, AstraZeneca exceeded my expectations significantly and I was pleasantly surprised when I joined at how positive the working atmosphere is. I enjoy working in my team alongside other apprentices too and it's great to have such knowledgeable scientists that surround me to help me with my apprenticeship journey.
From the very start, I noticed the AstraZeneca was a strongly organised company due to the high number of inductions and training courses provided. The support was great as there were specific people to contact so I knew who to speak to about a certain issue. I have a great mentor which gives up a lot of his time to help me and train me on HPLC. I also have one study day a week which I can choose which day to take (flexibility). The programme is also well organised and I have a clear view of the timeline and structure.
My manager is always available to talk to should I have any issues. Additionally, the HR team are great and there is an excellent system to be able to reach HR with any enquiries and there is a short wait time to get a response. My mentor supports me everyday, especially with identifying opportunities for me to get involved with. Overall, everyone at AstraZeneca is more than happy to give up their time to help you if you need.
The majority of my tutors have been great so far and have provided me with well thought out and informative content. I have had a few issues in the past with not receiving grades on time but that has been quickly sorted by the head of department. I thoroughly enjoy my course and it is almost identical to the Chemistry degree which is what I've always wanted to study.
Some of the modules that I study are great for helping me with my day to day tasks at work, such as the Analytical Chemistry module as they go into detail about a lot of the techniques that I carry out at work. I have also completed some more vocational modules which require me to research more about the company and the way it works as a business. So overall, I believe my qualification really helps me perform better at work.
Besides from Covid, AstraZeneca hold a lot of virtual social events and have now started introducing face to face events which have been great to meet new apprentices and get to know my team better. The company also has a leisure centre which holds sports clubs, fitness classes and a gym which I frequently use. I have also been involved in some charity work for the local community with my team.
Yes
I have actually just recommended AstraZeneca to someone on my course and they have got an interview. I believe that it is an excellent company which pushes you to obtain your best results alongside providing the best support. Having completed an apprenticeship previously at another company, I have something to compare it to and I have enjoyed every day since being with the company.
Although the application process seems quite lengthy, I recommend sticking with it as even just getting an interview with AZ is an amazing achievement and great practice for the future. The interview and assessment days are made fun by the organisers and it is a really good experience. The onboarding process is well organised and the organisers provide a great amount of support, alongside your line manager which will help you to settle in quickly. Additional to this, AZ offer amazing opportunities to grow your skills such as offering secondments into other teams and providing extra curricular events such as STEM events to get involved with.
