My role varies on a frequent basis. each of my placements last the best part of 6 months so with the scheme being 2 years long, I get to experience four different parts of the company being an apprentice. My placements have been different each time round so to put a pin on what I do on a daily basis would be hard for me to say, but all work is extremely interesting.
I have developed a wide array of skills whilst working at the company. I joined the scheme straight from school so my skills in terms of communication with people of all different age categories was heavily limited. I would definitely say that the apprenticeship has improved my skills in communication as a whole, whether is be office etiquette or body language.
I really enjoy the programme. The company is such a fascinating place and because it is such a broad company, although it may be cliché, you learn something new every day. As I was coming to the company from school with no exposure to any sort of experience in a field like this, I was nervous. But the company made me feel completely comfortable straight away.
The company is huge so it would be hard for me to comment on the whole organisation of the company. However, with all the teams I have been in, structure is a very important thing across the teams. It ultimately builds a foundation for the team which allows things to flow smoothly when carrying out a project/piece of work.
I would say as an apprentice, you are a priority. The company focuses quite heavily on the future and as an apprentice you are exactly that. Everyone I have met has been more than happy to give me guidance on whatever I needed. The company employ the statement "no question is a silly question" and it is completely true, people are more than happy to answer any question you may have.
As an apprentice, ultimately your apprentice/college work is the most important thing. Each team you sit within will be completely aware of what your college requirements are, and are more than happy to help you towards your goals as an apprentice. I would say that you get more than enough support towards what you need.
I think the apprentice standard helps in various ways in my roles within teams. I think communication and confidence is heavily pushed, which is a great thing as it allows me as an apprentice to go out of my way to contact new people when I join a new team.
There are plenty of extra curricular activities to get involved in. There is networking events on a very frequent basis which allows you to talk to people you would never come across in normal work life. There are occasionally the odd sporting charity event which is offered to the large majority of the company.
Yes
I would most definitely recommend BAE Systems to a friend. It is a company that is very people focused and the main priority is making sure the employees sit in a good and healthy mindset. Also, with the age I currently sit at, the pay is great and it is all the better when the company is so interesting. It is almost a no brainer.
I would say put your all into the whole interview process. It is a very competitive process and plenty of people will be trying to get the exact same job as you. You need to show the interviewer that you are the correct person for the job. Also make sure you do plenty of research, firstly to help towards your interview, but also to make sure that the job is right for you.
