I am an Electrification and Plant apprentice for Network Rail. Wer get to experience: Distribution- Dealing with feeder stations, signal supplies. Plant-renewing points heating, generator maintenance, submersible pumps. We also get an appreciation of the overhead line system, carrying out various maintenance tasks and the planning office, looking at how they analyse and calculate maintenance figures. And finally we get an appreciation of track and signal discipline.
I had already completed the BTEC Diploma in Engineering that we recieve in the first year, but the instructors are second to none, helping the information sink in next time. I have learnt a vast array of wiring skills, mechanical knowledge and improved on my maths since being a part of this apprenticeship
One of the best experiences of my life; Meeting new people, making friends, learning new skills and getting paid to do it! Cant go wrong :)
Although during the apprenticeship we are not technically allowed to be used in place of a full time employee. Apprentices are welcomed by everyone and people are always willing to help.
Very much so! We are out on the tools majority of the time with 'Work Based Learing Reports' to complete (20) outlining what we have learnt, sticking to specific subjects. Along with a daily diary and regular 12 week reviews to ensure we are staying on track and enjoying the experience.
As mentioned, we are always recieving 1-to-1s and everyone is always up for a chat.

I have heard that other apprenticeships have a slightly higher pay package. However Network Rail's is more than suitable for my age group (19) and when we have to travel for training purposes, all food, accomodation and travel is paid for by the company! Can't complain at that :)
