  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Being a Cloud Engineer Apprentice, I learned about tools, processes and technology used to support an enterprise cloud platform, especially, on AWS. On a day-to-day, it involved dealing with tickets on Service Now, participating in hands-on training and mentoring sessions with colleagues within the team, updating documentation on the cloud platforms to ensure it is up-to-date and available for all colleagues, attend 1:1 with manager, team meetings and organisation-level meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have had absolutely every technical skill I'm now using on a day-to-day basis. I'm slowly increasing both my technical ability and domain knowledge through active participation in project lifecycle and support activities. I have also developed soft skills such as troubleshooting, communication skills with all types of stakeholders.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was perfect for people like me who have had knowledge and experience in a completely different field and wanted to retrain. From day 1, it was a total immersion into the corporate world. I really enjoyed the hands-on approach and the real world context. I also enjoyed the support I received from colleagues and from teachers.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It was very well structured as I knew where I was going. I had regular 1:1 with my team manager, quarterly reviews and I knew who to turn to If any problem arises. At college, the structure was good as I had 6 exams to take and I needed to revise one exam at a time with teh support of teachers.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • 100% support from the employer. It's the ideal apprentice employer. At Sage, employees benefit from a very nurturing and supportive environment. I have recommended Sage to all my friends and family who would like to retrain and even my children if this is what they would like to do when it will be time to decide.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • After a bumpy start when I didn't know exactly what the programme entailed and I was thrown into the deep end. I can now say I received full support from my training provider. The teachers were always on hand If I had any question. They provided me with answers and explanations.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It was definitely be a great help to my day-to-day assignments as we take time to review the theory behind everything I put into practice and I can ask questions and I know where to look for information. In my case, the networking module was teh most useful module. This is something we use on a day-to-day basis.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have 5 volunteering days we can use to support a charitable organisation. There's also a Christmas gala and team socials. We haven't been able to enjoy all of these as much as we've been in various lockdowns but this is something that will hopefully resume soon. We also now meet in the office twice a week and have occasions to socialise with other team members.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Sage to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Sage is a fantastic organisation to work for. I have been warmly welcomed into the team. Despite the fact that It has been a whole new World for me, the support from everyone at Sage has been truly overwhelming. I was always encouraged to ask difficult questions at all levels.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sage?
  • The application process is pretty straightforward with a video interview and an assessment centre. I would advise to stay focused and be organised. Do not hesitate to ask questions and be curious throughout the whole journey. There is a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities at Sage so please do apply.
