  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice with Network Rail, my duties entail supporting the maintenance teams to carry out routine maintenance of the railway infrastructure. I work both nightshift and dayshift to carry out these tasks. Tasks range from re-railing, re-sleepering, gauge rectification, and vegetation removal. Each day i communicate with my section manager, supervisor and colleagues within the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my apprenticeship I have learnt many new skills such as planning jobs, carrying out jobs and effective communication skills. I have achieved 11 core track engineering compentencies whcih enable me to carry out tasks on my own. To gain these a strong knowledge base is required. I have also completed a level 3 NVQ and Level 3 ILM course which will stnad me in good stead for the future and my career within the rail industry.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme, I have met a lot of new people from all over the UK whom I will keep in contact with for a long time and I feel it has gave me a solid start to my railway career.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Network Rail?
  • I feel my managers value the work I put in and they have taken time to assist me and develop me throughout my apprenticeship. I have been involved in numerous projects and with every one my contributions have been taken on board.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From the beginning of my programme I have felt that there has been a continuous structure to develop all apprentices throughout the programme. the 12 week review system is effective as it has allowed me to look back periodically and see where i have developed and what areas I can develop going forward.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider give all apprentices all the required information, resources and time to complete their apprenticeship. There is a willingness by all staff I have come in contact with to help me with any queries I have had. I have thoroughly enjoyed my training programme so far.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer have given me the tools to begin a career within the rail industry and my line manager has been extremely supportive and given me various opportunities to become a valuable member of our team. I am thankful from the support I have received.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Our salary package is one of the best for apprentices however, it can be improved. Travel for training is provided and when working away from home, all costs are covered by the employer which helps apprentices.

  • There are many charity events and buissness events that we have an opportunity to take part in.

  • 9. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The railway provides a solid career path and the training we recieve is fantastic. All of the support you recieve is helpful when working towards the completion of your apprenticeship. You don't only learn work based skills but also life skills which will enable you to become a well rounded individual.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • Always ask questions and be open minded.
