On a day to day basis, my work role involves a variety of manufacturing tasks. In the goodwood plant, we support the technicians with breakdowns and perform a variety of electrical and mechanical activities. This varies from circuit making, to using a lathe and a milling machine. We then have training for this at the local college to support
during the apprentice so far I have learnt a variety of new skills. These include training in order to be able to safely use a milling machine, a lathe machine, a variety of electrical testing and handling equipment too. On top of this we have been learnign how to use manual handling tools like files, hacksaws etc
I somewhat enjoy the program, however it was extremely miss sold to me when applying for the apprentice. it told me id be working in a state of the art workshop and it was portrayed to be the next best thing, but it feels like any normal workshop, with repeating tasks, where we have hit a blank wall for now
the organization of the program is poor, the communication between college and work is poor. I was not told what the plans were for attendance to college and work during half terms and this then made me ate for my days work when they decided I needed to be in work instead of college. The communication needs to be improved
We receive support when we need it. we have weekly checkups and bi-weekly meetings where we can voice any opinions. we have HR staff we keep in contact with to go and talk to if we need the support and they can then set further meetings up from there if we need to.
during our college days we receive a satisfactory amount of support but during some lesson we need more demonstrations like how to use a milling machine before we use them as i was not sure and managed to complete minimal work in my first lesson on the mill as i hadn't been taught how to use it correctly and the time it took my tutor to help me out was very long.
the qualification perfectly helps me with my work, they perform well together and have easily transferable. the college work helps me perform better in work and visa versa. we also have the perfect time in college in order to be able to complete all necessary theory work. but all in all they work well together
during a work week i involve myself in extra curricular activates. these involve playing football 2 times a week at the chichester college astro turf pitches for an hour in the evenings on Wednesdays and Fridays. we pay a small fee of 3 pounds per person to rent the pitches for an hour. it helps keep us social and fit
No
it was completely mis sold to me to begin with, with alot of added stress of completely relocating to the other side of the country, to then not enjoying my job as much as i would wish to and having the stress of bills and not being able to enjoy my downtime as the money is tight. if they were local i would tell them to go for it, but i don't believe its worth relocating for
the application process takes a very ling time. i applied in February and found out I had the job in may. there are a lot of steps we go through and a lot of interviews and tests in order to get into the apprentice scheme. and make sure you apply for what you are interested in and keep an open mind
