My role involves taking samples of cementitious products and testing them under various conditions to ensure consistent quality for the end user. This involves a daily routine of testing both physical and chemical properties.
I have been working through a Higher Apprenticeship Diploma in Mineral Products, as well as gaining on the job experience with time management, processes and data entry.
It has exceeded any expectations I had, I am gaining knowledge and skills that were previously out of my scope in regards to career development and the team members on site have been nothing short of welcoming and helpful.
I have been given ample time within work to focus on my studying and coursework commitments. The university modules have been straightforward to follow and any questions I have are answered. I also have frequent meetings to ensure that I am on track.
I have never beenb refused any help when needed; an open door attitude allows me to visit various management members to cover various aspects of my apprenticeship. I have also received mentorship from a graduate on site who has been able to guide me through the work based training.
While there isn't much immediate support and tutoring from my training providers outside of work, I am always able to contact them when I am stuck or have queries. While I enjoy the freedom, I feel I would benefit from a more hands on tutoring approach.
I find that I am able to follow meetings and conversations far more easily, piecing together my understanding of the cement manufacturing process and how my role as a laboratory technician fits into the process. I believe this knowledge will be beneficial to the plant in the future.
There may be extra-curricular activities available, however this is not necessarily in my area of interest. I may look into it more when I have completed my qualification.
Yes
I believe Tarmac to be a progressive and caring employer. I've always been able to find support when needed and I have never felt more secure in a job role. This is a working environment that I can highly recommend.
Maintain a desire to forward yourself. Always strive to learn and never be afraid to ask a question, even if you find that you are needing the answer repeated or told in a different way.
