As a leather apprentice my job role is to learn the complete set of leather work skills from inspection, preparation and cutting, to sewing, covering and assembly work. I am working within the Leather Shop and attending college on a part time basis where I am gaining knowledge about upholstery and soft furnishings. Over three years, I will achieve qualifications in Modern Manufacturing, together with accompanying technical qualifications in Leather. My daily duty is to learn various skills within the Leather Shop areas, the placements are changing every month or two but it depends on the depth of training in each particular area.
Definitely, I learned how works production system, The work supported me with various external and internal trainings needed for the future role. The management helped to create personal development plan.
I like the fact that the apprenticeship is helping me with understanding how the work is organized and how different systems can be used within the business to achieve the targets. The company culture is very friendly for everyone and supportive.
The introduction of the apprenticeship programmer is clear. Support meetings with mentors are very beneficial, but it is depending on mentor, some of them needs more training to understand better their role as a mentor. However, sometimes there is some misunderstanding about tasks delegation between college and workplace. Overall, the program is organized well. Most of the colleagues from work environmental are very helpful and happy to support is needed.
The accessibility of support is very easy, Manager, HR Team or Mentor always manage to find the time to support me. As a apprentice you can book the meeting with them by using virtual scheduling assistant which helping you to to find the right time for everyone during the work time. The guidance with problems are very beneficial.
The training provider is supportive, however sometimes it feels like they have lack of knowledge and the tutor is too busy to be able to help you straight away. So there are the moments were you are waiting long time for support from he tutor, which ends with wasting time for waiting. Overall, the training in interesting and I am enjoying it.
I have a feelings that the qualifications gained through training provider are not as beneficial as they could be compare to work. There are some similarities but I recon there could some improvements done to match qualification training to work roles.
There are a lot of extra-curricular activities and events organized by work. You can get involve in charity, races, concert, sport events. The company organizing family day during the year when you can invite your family members and show your workplace. The company running news papers for apprentices, SharePoint where all important information can be shared. Also, the company give some discounts for some social classes like gym, restaurants, concerts etc.
