As an Apprentice I can be involved indifferent tasks each day. Some of these tasks may be projects and some of these may involve doing a placement in a different department around the business. Occasionally I assist the production line when they need my help as this is an assembly apprenticeship.
The standout skill that I would say I have developed massively is my IT and computer skills. I was competent before using Microsoft Excel but I lacked the knowledge to better my skills. In my time at Rolls-Royce I have been able to learn all sorts of new techniques to apply to Microsoft excel, it has made my time at work a lot easier knowing these skills.
I enjoy the programme, coming into the role it was clear that this could be a dream job for me and that I could stay at the company for a long time. Of course there are days where I lose this feeling, maybe this is because I feel like I am being treated unfairly but this comes with most Jobs.
I believe that there are improvements that need to be made to the programme in order to attract more employees. The communication between the workplace and the training provided has never seemed that clear, however it is slowly improving. A lot of the time it is hard as an employee to see the greater plan, but in years to come I’m sure this will become more clear.
Recently there has been a great improvement in support from my employer, before it didn’t feel like anything would get done or that our worries fell on deaf ears. However since some staff changes we are now fully supported and our worries and issues are dealt with promptly and professionally.
In my first year of higher level education (Level 4) I feel there has been a lack of support from my training provider. It feels as though my colleagues are a level ahead of me and maybe that their education is still fresh in their minds. We work at different levels and I feel as though this is not seen by my training provider, I do not feel like I am learning rather I am just ticking boxes.
The course that our training provider provides us with is less relevant to our actual job roles. Especially if we are office based at the time. I feel like we should focus more on technical skills such as IT. Again it comes back to the same issue whereas I feel I am just ticking boxes or trying to pass the course just to get the qualitative not because it helps me at work.
Yes there are extra curricular activities at work that I can get involved in. At this point in time I am not involved in any of them but in the future I would like to get involved whether that may be a sports team such as the golf society or even helping out when there are events at a local school.
Yes
As much as there are little issues that need to be sorted out, I still feel as though Rolls-Royce motor cars is an excellent place to work Especially for those of us with a passion for the automotive industry. When I step into work or even into my uniform I wear the logo with pride.
Get in early… I was not taught about apprenticeships as much as I should have been in secondary school. I left school without thinking of an apprenticeship as an option. I don’t feel like I have wasted the years in between school and this job but I would have liked to have started when I had left school to carry on my education and start earning a little more at a younger age.
