I have responsibility for managing the finances for the Learning and Talent function for a UK Bank. The role has some activities that are required at regular intervals but is also very varied. I also look after the risks associated with the function and look to manage these as well as be involved in ad-hoc project work.
I have seen my skills and confidence grow significantly over the period while I've been studying for my Executive MBA. I now consider and analyse situations differently and with much wider consideration of other areas that I may not have done previously. I have developed knowledge related to a number of different tools to help support my analysis.
I had some trepidation prior to signing up for the course due to the amount of time I might be expected to invest and how this would impact on my life outside the MBA and how it would impact on my enjoyment but I needn't have worried as this hasn't been a concern.
There has been sufficient time throughout the course to structure my individual studies alongside the team related activities with others. The university has provided sufficient structure that alongside a certain element of self-discipline, the demands of the programme have been manageable. When I have needed support, I've found staff approachable and have received the support I expected.
I receive support from my MBA programme coach where we discuss progress and I'm constructively challenged to help me identify any blind spots or to consider alternative ways that I might have approached an activity or decision. The programme has also helped me connect to others within the wider work environment and helped me expand my network
The teaching on the MBA programme has been very good. While naturally some subjects are more enjoyable than others to me as an individual, I have found that the content of each module has been tailored for all students to get the most out of the content. Having access to the course lead at regular intervals has been useful.
The skills, knowledge and experience that I have gained over the course of the programme has helped me to think and act differently. I am more thorough in critically considering tasks, actions and responsibilities though not only the academic knowledge gained but also learning from others on the course with the differing skills and experiences they bring.
While studying through the global pandemic and also living a fair distance from the University, I've not been able to take advantage of the limited extra curricular activities that have been organised. There have been networking events that have been arranged and there have been ad-hoc social events that have been arranged while on campus days.

There are many opportunities available within a global organisation such as HSBC for those that might wish to look to take advantage. The bank is very clear in its support for learning via the apprenticeship scheme (and outside it) alongside the positive challenge to be the best I can be within the qualification has been very beneficial.
Before applying, try to think about where you would like to see yourself in 5 or 10 years within your career. Map out the route that you might need to take to achieve this goal and be ready to share this via an application form or at interview, particularly in how HSBC can help you to achieve your goal.
