I am a UNIX/LINUX technician and I carry out Operating System patching and upgrades.
I have learnt how to administer a UNIX environment from a command line and how to write UNIX based scripts and programs. I have improved my programming skills and knowledge on UNIX and Linux systems.
I have found learning about UNIX a challenging and interesting experience. My work with the BTEC part of my apprenticeship has allowed me to experience multiple different areas in the IT industry which has been great.
HSBC has been very supportive during the apprenticeship program and has made every effort to help complete the program whether providing time for BTEC work and assignments or providing facilities, training and expertise.
During the start of the programme there were several issues related to having work marked and returned with feedback on time as well as organising the overall schedule of work. These issues were quickly addressed though and has since been well laid out with known targets and requirements clearly shown.
The training provider has been available either through electronic messaging or in face to face meetings throughout the programme to provide support and help with any issues I have had with the programme
My employer has been very supportive throughout the programme providing time and resources whenever required as well as regularly checking on my progress and taking any steps required to help complete my work.
I have found the salary provided for my position as an apprentice perfectly adequate for my costs
There are a number of clubs and activities that are available along with several opportunities to help with charity work.
