My day to day tasks are running experiments and analyzing data ready to be reported to the client. Other responsibilities include tracking/ ordering lab consumables, maintaining equipment and attending project and non project related meetings.
I have learnt a wide range of techniques across multiple disciplines ranging from analytical chemistry to molecular biology. I have over the years gained confidence in myself and improved my soft skills such as presenting to external/ internal audiences.
I have enjoyed the range of areas/ projects I have been involved in and working in a dynamic work environment that provides a great opportunity to learn about different topics from subject matter experts.
The apprenticeship program is fairly well structured around 1 year rotations in different departments/ areas. Each year you are assigned a new line manager and mentor. If you need support in something all you need to do is ask and someone will always be able to help/ point you in the right direction.
The support available is fairly good as having regular meeting with my mentor and line manager allows for discussion of workplace issues /events. This allow both my mentor and line manager to advise on how to tackle any issue or find solutions that work for me and others. Line managers and mentors are always open to hearing about what my goals are and will try to find opportunities to help achieve them.
The content provided is adequate for introducing you to a topic however to address questions in assignments further reading must be conducted. fortunately a large online library give access to wide range of E-books, Journals and videos. Tutors are always available and relay helpful in resolving any questions you have about the course.
Some modules match more with my job role than others. This is to be expected as the Applied Bioscience must cover a broad range of topics to fit the areas people may be employed in. So of the theory has most definitely directly translated into my workplace and this has made it much easier to provide real world examples in assignments.
The is extracurricular activities such as journal clubs, and charity events to raise money and awareness of different topics. Social events/ gatherings take place to enhance team building and every summer a company wide barbecue is hosted.

Its a great place to get started if you are looking into starting a carer in sciences especially if you are interested in pharmaceuticals. no matter what you end up doing your are always contributing towards the development of new / novel treatments of a wide range of diseases.
Make sure you have a passion for getting hands on experience as this is what the apprenticeship is based on. If you prefer to learn from on the job experience while working towards a degree qualification this is a great opportunity. Make sure you do your home work and have a understanding on what drug discovery involves and what Charles River offers.
