As a Graduate Planning Consultant I am responsible for assisting Planners on large scale schemes through reviewing documents, including drawings; provide feedback on design to be more in line with policy; communicate with client and the council to progress applications; monitor applications and provide general support and advice.
I have developed my critical analyses skill through this role, in having to always regard plans and ensure it is up to policy standards. Being able to form a strategy in regards to schemes has been highly important and is a skill I have learnt through my time here.
I really to enjoy my programme here. I previously came from another smaller consultancy, which I felt did not offer me the mentorship and guidance which I needed so early in my career. My team at Savills are very supportive of my development and offer me the mentorship I need.
From joining Savills, there were clear, set timelines as to when I will begin my University degree, what is expected of me at work, when I am to graduate and when I will be submitting my APC to become fully qualified. This has been really helpful in helping me prepare.
I have a personal mentor to help with my management of work as well as report to my line manager who often checks in with monthly meetings to see if there is any area where I need help/assistance in. This has been a real benefit to the role.
The course at my University is really interesting and brings together really interesting people who are also interested in Town Planning. I like the fact we work with Architects who are also training, however the University itself could be better with organizing enrollment etc. Lecturers are great!
The subject matter through my course is very relevant to what I do day to day. This has really helped my progress within my job and understanding of my role. The course provider has taught me skills and which I use everyday within my role, such as deciphering legislation.
There are so many events at working, including a variety of sports related social activities. I personally play netball and attend the professional networking events which are held nationwide. This has been really informative and fun, meeting people across the country.
Yes
The support and mentorship alone has been a real benefit to my progression in my career. Not only this, but the working environment is great as they really create a fun company to work for with all the additional events/networking events.
Be confident and demonstrate a keen interest for planning. Try to stay up to date with what is currently happening in the planning world. A great way to do this is to listen to the Room 106 podcast every two weeks - great overview of key issues in planning right now.
