  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Building and reviewing financial models internally and for/with clients. Working with various software such as Microsoft Excel, Power BI, SQL, Alteryx and Python. Completing lots of technical training alongside working and studying for the CIMA qualification. Helping out on real-life projects and developing skills through training and work experience.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to use plenty of programmes/software that were completely new to me including Power BI, Alteryx and SQL. I have also developed my skills considerably in Microsoft Excel. Alongside the technical training I have been studying for the CIMA qualification which has drastically improved my business acumen and knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is a great balance of working, technical training and studying for qualifications. There is a good amount of study leave offered and the business are understanding of when you need to take time to complete studies and training. The work on offer is also interesting and people are very helpful and friendly.

    9/10

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a clearly set out structure right from the beginning. After an induction week to the firm we started studying for the professional qualification straight away and then went straight into basic technical training before then going on to start client work. You can review the programme plan for a whole year right from the beginning, but it is your responsibility to make sure managers etc. are aware of when you will be off studying or training.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a lot of support available. The tuition providers have a dedicated team to helping KPMG students. Colleagues are also always happy to help and the amount of study leave you are given is sufficient. If working on projects, leaders are often happy to accommodate your study leave as well.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider offers live online sessions with very knowledgeable tutors as well as pre-recorded online lectures that you can watch in your own time. There are also plenty of practice questions and detailed guidance about all of the exams. There are also a team that you can reach out to if you need any support with studying.

    9/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is not directly linked to the role but it has a very strong focus on business and financial acumen which does come in very useful when working on projects of a financial nature. There are certainly some projects where the qualification is more relevant so it depends what you end up working on.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a lot of professional networks at KPMG such as the Social Mobility Network and KNOW (KPMG Network of Women). The offices and teams also put on their own social activities which are always fun and well-attended. There are also sports teams depending on the office, such as netball and football.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a really good place to start your career with lots of support, training and social activities available. The work and studying is not easy but it is worth it since you will quickly become qualified and knowledgeable. The range of skills you learn is broad and people at the company are great.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • Be yourself in interviews. Make sure that your personal values align with the company values before you apply otherwise it probably isn't right for you. Do your research into the company and the team you are applying to (e.g. look on LinkedIn) and make sure you know what will be expected of you if successful.
