  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working in a busy environment, learning cooking skills or people skills. Cleaning constantly. Keeping an eye on cooking and storange temperature as well as correctly handling food for customers including allergens. Handling taking orders and payments or dealing with complaints and resolving them. As well as regularly training new staff members.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt about the various laws surrounding cooking and food handling. Minimum temperatures, what to look out for in others behaviours, what is expected of us in regards to paperwork. It also helps me to pass along the knowledge to anyone who may not already know, helping them expand their knowledge and perhaps take on the course themselves.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy learning new information and seeing how things can be done differently outside of my workplace. Seeing the information and how I can apply it or pass along, it's very interesting and easy to remember the key points. The website could do with updating as a lot of links are broken but I found missing information on Google.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. Each section is clearly separated and well spread out with each area having well titled units. Missing information can make it a little frustrating, trying to do knowledge questions when the information is missing from the coursework itself. Luckily the answers could be found elsewhere.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer was very supportive, working my shifts around teams calls or observational visits. They did regular catch ups and made sure I had all the information required. They also updated me if they heard anything before I found out and my managers were happy to help if I needed to ask for information from them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I had one particular person assigned to me to help me with the apprenticeship. She wasn't allowed to outright give me the answers to questions I was stuck on but she would reword the questions in a way that made more sense or would direct me to where I could find the information.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It makes me more aware of the legal expectations of my workplace. Before the course I knew there were certain expectations legally but to do the course, I find out to what extent and the minimum requirements. It will also help with customer relations when it comes to communicating information.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a Facebook groups, there's a yearly quiz for all of our stores in the area, there's football tournaments and sports days. There's also a lot of charity events to raise money for HMRC and regular litter picks in our area to help clear up and make the town a little nicer.

  • 9a. Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As long as you can handle a non-stop environment, this job isn't too bad. Yes there are stressful days but there's a friendly atmosphere on most shifts and everyone is constantly chatting and having fun whilst working hard. You get a 45 minute break with free food included.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
  • Expect a fast-paced environment, lots of noise and hot kitchen equipment. We use friers and huge grills to cook the food so make sure you have your wits about you so you don't get burned. Don't expect an easy ride, it's a hard working place but not a bad place to work.
