My role as an Apprentice Economist is to aid in projects that involve either commercial or residential developments. I work with property data and information, oftentimes quantitative and qualitative using public and private data sources. We use these to make projections of the benefits and outcomes of certain developments and I also partake in funding bids and business cases.
Given that I work with data and a large portion of my university course involves working with data on digital platforms, my proficiency in Excel has increased. I have also found that with a busy schedule, my time management, independence, and responsibility with work and time has also largely increased too. Moreover, work on geospatial software was a completely new skill to me that I have acquired recently.
My experience so far has been brilliant! As well as the learning side, the work is so varied and intriguing, so each project is engaging. Plus, seeing the fruits of my work, whether it be seeing if something has then been approved as a result of your aid, or simply just producing a good piece of work through newly acquired skills, is quite rewarding.
My work life and the learning aspect is intertwined, so I must ensure I am on top of my time management in and out of work hours to maintain a sufficient level of study time, so the study day I take weekly is perfectly allotted and my colleagues are also aware I require this day for work on my modules. As for the work side, the structure is good and time is allocated, recorded and organised every week; although, it does get busy at times!
Savills has so far shown a lot of support for me, in ensuring my time for education is met accordingly, allowing me to practice my faith, supported my health greatly when I have encountered obstacles, and my HR team is always on standby whenever I am in need of them.
I receive good support from my training providers at my company as they are always at bay to answer my questions and explain things to me in depth. My HR team is great too and they are always on standby if I ever require their assistance or if I have an issue.
It allows me to understand economics much better, applicable to a real world scenario and especially fitted to the niche, given we work in the property industry. Being able to conjoin together my economic theory with an ever-changing industry truly gives a unique scope and perspective that can be appreciated differently.
Throughout the year, we have regular socials and away days, including meals, outdoor activities, sometimes in different cities, and I myself have attended networking sessions in my time here. Some colleagues also partake in extra sporting activities outside of work hours and I find this is a great opportunity to try out new things!

Savills has a very broad international reach, meaning opportunities to work on very interesting projects are endless, gaining industry level knowledge on various areas, and how they themselves link into the real estate sector gives that edge over. Plus, as a degree apprentice, gaining this insight and understanding is quite valuable.
To be enthusiastic about not just the residential and property sector, but how other industries would impact it and to have an affinity for trends, data, qualitative and quantitative research. To be open to learning new skills, being proactive in acquiring the skills, knowledge and understanding, and try being up to date with current property news.
