For the first year of the apprenticeship i attend the apprentice training school on site at Mini Plant Oxford. from there on Mondays i study our required modules for Btec Level 3 such as mathematics and electrical principles, then during the week i am in the workshop attending rotations, for example i am on the fluid power rotation at the moment and will be moving onto machining next week.
i have learnt many new skills whilst being on an apprenticeship at BMW, for instance i have learned how to safely and effectively operate milling machines, pillar drills, MMA welding equipment and various hand tools such as files, tapping equipment and circuit assembly tools. i have also developed my existing communicational skills by communicating in different ways in regard to new terminologies and new people.
i do enjoy my programme to a large extent mainly due to the vast amounts of activities we take part in and also due to the good facilities we have in Plant Oxford. however, there are some factors which hinder the extent to which i enjoy my programme, such as the organization and structure of my programme .
for the most part i feel my programme is well organised and structured in terms of being in the workshop for 4 days a week and taking part in different rotations. Despite this i feel that the one day i come in for the Btec theory side of my programme it is to some degree quite disorganised. Despite this only being one day i feel the Btec side of my programme is essential for my learning and that it should be well structured and organized.
i feel that i do receive a lot of support from my employer, this is due to the fact that we are given all the resources we could need to carry out theory work and practical work. furthermore, there are always channels to communicate through based on what kind of help we require (E.g. mental health, work in general and even physical health).
i feel that there is a lot of support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications, this is because my tutors are always happy to help with any problems i may have, also, i am given plenty of helpful guidance and advice to further improve my work and learning.
in terms of the job role at the end of my apprenticeship in which i am being trained for i feel confident that my qualification through my training provider will help me understand how to work and what to expect in engineering environments such as the assembly lines here at Plant Oxford.
there are some extra-curricular activities to get involved in at my work, for example there is an apprentice news letter which informs apprentices of what is going on at different plants. there are also extra-curricular activities such as charity quizzes which allow everyone to get involved and socialize and donate to charity and win prizes.
Yes
It is a good environment to start your career due to the good facilities they have available to drive your learning and improve your skills. also, there are many benefits of working at BMW such as the car scheme which can save you money and make your commute to and from work much easier and comfortable.
i would advise others who are are applying to BMW group to always work hard and stay on top of your work load in order to thrive at your job role. also i advise them to take any opportunities given to them so they can gain as many skills as possible and build their network
