The Clifford Chance Access scheme includes multiple opportunities for development across a two year period, including an initial classroom based placement, networking events, mentorship, tutoring, work experience and more. You apply for and begin the scheme in year 12 and participate throughout year 13 and your first year of university.
Only being currently half way through the program I have not yet experienced all it has to offer but so far I have participated in multiple workshops and session surrounding skills in commercial law and what it is like working in a large commercial law firm like Clifford Chance. I have also had the opportunity to undergo tutoring funded by the firm which has helped prepare me for my upcoming exams.
I have throughly enjoyed my experience of the access scheme so far. Every event or workshop I have attended has been extremely enjoyable and informative, aiding me in my personal development and I don’t regret any of the time and efforts I have spent as part of the scheme.
All the events were well planned with online workshops being delivered through the forage with a clear timetable and agenda for the day. In person events were also well organised with a clear itinerary and plan for the day with clear timings allowing us to plan our travel to the office and back.
So far I have gained an invaluable insight into the culture of Clifford Chance and general ideas into the working culture of other large law firms. There have been multiple opportunities to speak to current employees and trainees in order to gain an insight into the company as well as being able to tour the office at in person events.
The access scheme has definitely broadened my horizons and made me consider career paths I never would have considered without taking part in the program, however as I am still young I have not completely decided on my future career choice yet so cannot discuss its effectiveness in regards to that.
There is no base payment for taking part in the access scheme however the opportunities provided are spectacular. For example all travel to the office for in person events will be reimbursed and there is also the opportunity to undertake tutoring, in preparation for exams, which is completely funded by the company.
There are many opportunities to network and speak to current employees both virtual and in person. These opportunities are carried out in a very casual manner allowing you to feel at ease and make the most of the opportunity provided to ask questions and find out more about the firm.
Yes
This program has been one of the best development opportunities I have had the privilege of being a part of. The experience is insurmountable and the levels of personal development you will experience are well worth your time. It offers arguably more opportunities than any other free work experience program currently available.
I would advise anyone considering applying to definitely do so! I would recommend you research the firm and program fully before you apply and demonstrate your knowledge of the program throughout your application as well as allowing your passion and drive show, which are qualities the firm are looking for in access applicants.
