In my role as a trainee project manager day to day activities include participating in meeting, chasing individuals for information, creating reports and coordinating meeting times. No two days are exactly the same in this job and that's something that keeps me motivated. It also isn't without its challenges.
I have now been in my job for 9 months and I have already learnt so much. The main one is how to conduct myself in a corporate manor. Business etiquette is hugely important in this role in order to display to the client you respect to them along with your dedication to the project. I have also learnt the way in which you chase information off people in a nice way without seeming pushy.
I really enjoy my job and i am glad that I came into the construction industry. Especially working for Mace it has made it even more enjoyable due to the supportive nature of the business. Everyone is always happy to help no matter how busy they are which has been massively beneficial for me as a new starter.
The apprenticeship programme has a good structure to it as we have our day to day jobs, day release university and then we have training days as a whole year cohort delivered by the emerging talent team. These training days are useful knowledge wise but it also gives us the opportunity to network with peers that started at the same time as us but that work in different offices or on different projects.
Mace have multiple different channels of support including the emerging talent team along with a buddy system and line managers. I have found my line manager extremely helpful in my development during my time in the company. However, on any project I am on there has always been support available.
My university is good at providing support as there are always module leaders walking around the block checking in on us. They are also always open to questions and they allocate time in lectures to discuss the current assignment and they will even use that time to read our work and lead us into the right direction if we aren't currently
I have just completed the law module at university and this has massively benefited me in my role as i am currently involved in a project start up which includes tender routes along with procurement routes which i can apply my university learning to. I am confident that my university will continue to benefit me in similar situations throughout
We have networks within our buisness that we are able to join and these have monthly forums. We also regionally have health and wellbeing teams which I am a part of for my region which consists of leading forums, organising volunteering days and work socials. The work socials are a great chance to network with people our office that we don't usually interact with because of the projects we are on
Yes
The benefits i have found working for mace with it being such a big companhy have massively helped me in my exposure and therefore development in my role. I think anyone that starts with Mace will be just as pleased as I have been from the start and throughout my time here.
Mace are constantly looking for people to 'redefine the boundaries of ambition' If you are someone that is wanting to make a change then this is why you will get the job. You don't have to have a construction background just determination to learn, that's what will land you a job with Mace
