  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is providing CAD support to engineers on a variety of different projects. I have worked on a range of jobs from Scottish Water jobs to Maritime jobs to Structural cad work for a hospital. I use a range of programs such as Revit, Civils 3d and ArcGIS Pro.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to use AutoCAD from very little experience before hand as well as learning how to use Revit. I learned these skills from completing Pinnacle training courses as well as being shown by team mates. I have learned skills in using Arc GIS to produce dwg files for Scottish Water.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy this program very much it has given me the opportunity to reach my full potential and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a career in engineering. The culture of the company is very inclusive and any questions I have had have been answered by whoever I have asked.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well structured and thought out. My line manager made sure I was introduced to everyone and I was given a buddy to help me learn how everything works in the office. There is also plenty of training provided and team building exercises to help you intergrate into the team.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Motts have provided me with lots of support from learning basic skills to making sure I was fully integrated into the team. This came from my line manager always being open to questions to having a buddy system for any problems I may occur. Overall I feel I was provided with plenty of support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • UHI have been good at making sure | have enough support from their end from always being open to questions and having clear communication channels open between staff and students. Every student also has a PAT who they are able to go and talk to about any problems relating to the course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification I'm working towards helps me in my current role as it gives me a better understanding of what I'm working on and why I'm drawing what I am drawing. I feel through going to uni I have learnt more about what I'm working on and have a better understanding of what I'm doing.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is plenty of activities to get involved with each office has its own sports and social fund and regularly have activities for anyone can take part it. There is a wide range of activities to take part in from bowling to axe throwing to wine tasting and plenty more.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Mott MacDonald to anyone who is looking to further there career in the construction industry. As company they make sure new starters are welcomed and feel part of the team straight away. Everyone is always on hand to answer any questions you have no matter how stupid you think they may seem.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • The main tip I would give to anyone applying to join Mott MacDonald is to be yourself first and foremost and have the confidence that you will do a good job. I feel if you throw yourself in and try and make an effort with everyone you will do fine.
