My role involves working alongside environmental consultants to assess the impacts of a project on the surrounding and wider environment. I try to combine what I am learning at university with my current work projects. Each day is different as I shadow colleagues and learn new skills in the workplace.
As a degree apprentice, I have been able to develop several skills such as effective communication and team work, I have also been able to learn how to use multiple different software. The degree apprenticeship has increased my self confidence and ability to adapt to last minute changes/difficult situations at work.
So far I have really enjoyed the programme, it has brought me lots of opportunities and I have been able to involve myself in lots of different projects. Trying to balance work, university and life has been difficult at times but my line manager has been very understanding and supportive.
The structure in place is okay in my opinion, Mott MacDonald is very good in doing their role however the course provider/university need to review and be sure of how they are delivering the course and communicate this to the apprentice and Mott MacDonald. There is still some uncertainty with how the 20% off the job training works and recording of professional development.
From my experience, Mott MacDonald have been and are very supportive of employees. I have regular catch ups with my line manager and weekly meetings with my team to discuss progress, job opportunities and general wellbeing. My assigned buddy/mentor is really kind and helpful, they point me in the right direction if I am ever unsure.
I have university blocks once every few weeks which has its pros and cons. Whilst my tutors offer support outside of the block, I haven't felt comfortable enough to reach out to them for support with coursework. There isn't much support in work/life balance from the training provider.
The content at university is quite relevant and applicable to my current work projects. In my coursework we have had multiple opportunities to relate what we are doing to our companies, sometimes for research we are required to talk to colleagues to better our understanding of the company. This not only increases my knowledge but increases my confidence in speaking to people outside of my team and making connections.
There is always something going on at work! There are lots of opportunities to network in and outside of work hours. In my office our sports and social team regularly host different activities such as paint a pot and go karting. We also have coffee catch-ups, pay day lunches and knowledge sharing lunch meetings.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience working at Mott MacDonald so far. I have learned so much in a short space of time and the company has been very supportive of my career development. I am surrounded by good, knowledgeable people who work hard and are good at what they do, this apprenticeship is a great opportunity to work towards a career as an Environmental Consultant.
First of all, be yourself, the interview process can seem intimidating but the people are really nice and want you to do well! Secondly, no question is a silly question- you hear it often but there really isn't any question that shouldn't be asked (within reason!). We all start somewhere so don't be afraid to ask questions.
