My role as a Quantity Surveyor varies day to day, looking at risk, capital cost, whole cost and undertaking measurement. I work alongside a highly skilled team of professionals and with a variety of public clients who have differing requirements. The projects I work on range from small £500k schemes to £300m schemes.
Just recently I have finished undertaking the 5 year university course. This has enabled key skills in Quantity Surveying to be learnt. I have been able to apply these at work and develop my theory knowledge further. Mott MacDonald have also given me a large amount of training in the background.
I have very much enjoyed working as part of a team and individually. MM is a global company offering a variety of opportunities. MM have a great company culture and excellent people with strong work ethic. This makes for a very enjoyable working life. The apprenticeship has exceeded all expectations.
MM offer a well rounded training course throughout the apprenticeship, through the apprentice course, working to the graduate course. On these courses, gaining soft skills not taught at university. These courses also allow for a strong 'ECP' network to be built amongst peers. MM offer a mentoring scheme which also for extra support to be gained.
MM has a very supportive culture. My managers have always been brilliant, offering a variety of learning techniques and experience. My managers have always made it easy to access support and guidance. MM has a very good team culture, every teaches everyone - knowledge sharing essentially. Being mentor has also meant access to a wider group of knowledge.
My university and employer both offer supporting roles, working well together. Both are helping me to complete the apprenticeship to the best of my ability which I am very lucky to have. When I have ran into issues, both parties have been there to support me through the situation.
The training from university provides the background theory required to undertake my day to day role. I have always put the theory learnt into practise, nearly immediately. I would highly recommend apprenticeships for this reason. As someone who learns by doing, this was an excellent route to take and has shown my fullest potential.
MM offer a wide variety of social events and formal company events to attend - if you would like. The company also like to get involved with local communities through events, classes and project work. I have very much enjoyed the schools engagement promoting apprenticeships and the industry as there is such a variety of roles available.
Yes
I would 100% recommend MM apprenticeships. They offer a very support culture, offer a wide range of opportunities and create a fantastic training environment. MM have allowed me to develop at my own speed and offer guidance throughout. They have also allowed me to undertake a degree, which I never thought was possible.
My only advise would be; be yourself, ask a lot of questions and never give up. There are so many opportunities waiting to be had within the company, everyone could find a role suitable to them. I would also say know your value. Every has a story so share yours.
