Generally it is practical work; Making containment pieces for an installation, or removing old equipment such as cables. Will occasionally get involved with other tasks like cable pulling or just laborious tasks like loading vans and clearing the worksite
Interpersonal skills improved and confidence too as you need to be able to demand certain things be done from time to time. I have also picked up lots of technical skills and wish to work towards becoming a commissioning engineer.
Quite highly; Though sometimes work is poorly planned and there are days when work just isn't done (waiting for materials, people, permits, etc.) which are pretty draining. Other than that, Ive been given excellent opportunities and varied job roles which has been enjoyable.
I would say poorly; The timeline of the apprenticeship has been drip fed on a need-to-know basis and things like trying to acquire my ECS card exposed the fact that no one in my company seemed to know exactly what the procedure was or who is responsible for it.
Loads; Good relationships and easy communication with higher-up management and they've all been very supportive of me in wanting to progress myself further and have afforded me very generous opportunities to grow myself through education and courses etc.
We get a fair amount of support from JTL (our training organisation) in the form of monthly/bi-annual calls with our tutor, but we (all apprentices under JTL) are under the impression that everything is poorly planned, with phone calls seemingly random in occurrence, the SmartAssessor portfolio system is just awful by all measures (buggy, hard to use, bad interface, duplicate forms and tasks everywhere, hard to navigate, etc.)
Somewhat - The qualification is focused mainly on domestic electricians and unfortunately not the work we do on the London Underground so there is not much cross-over in terms of teaching. Obviously being an electrotechnical installation course, the basics are still relevant and the technical side of things can be learnt from too.
No - But I am not sure I would make use of them even if there was as there are only 2 other apprentices in our division that I work with.
Yes
Fairly relaxed work environments, acceptable pay, and decent work culture. Plus the work is quite unique and not something you could do at most other construction firms.
If you are determined to progress beyond the level of qualification of the apprenticeship, make your voice heard and tell your colleagues and supervisors; They will actually appreciate your drive and its more than likely you'll get what you want. Also remember that although you're at work, remember to enjoy it as best you can and get along with your colleagues; You're probably going to be spending more time with them than your family or friends so having a friendly enjoyable work environment is invaluable.
