4-Day insight scheme into the functionings of corporate law. Involved, multiple talks from associates and partners in different seats of practice within the firm and also a talk from barristers and in-house lawyers for a wider perspective of legal jobs. There was also a mock business acquisition challenge in which we had to work within teams to pitch the firm to a prospective client.
I developed communication skills as we were given several opportunities to network with lawyers of varied seniorities within the firm. The skills of attention-to-detail and collaboration were also developed within the group tasks due to the high level of precision and collective efforts required for good execution for the client.
I significantly enjoyed the work experience. As one of my initial exposures to the legal industry, I was given an incredibly in-depth insight into what it entails to be a corporate lawyer at a magic circle firm. This experience encouraged me to further explore the career path and was a defining factor in my ultimate decision to pursue it. I also enjoyed meeting like-minded individuals from all over the country and establishing friendships.
The work experience was incredibly well organised, this can be attributed to the overall structure. From the first day we received an induction along with a detailed schedule for the week giving descriptions of each session we would have. It was also made clear who we could refer to for support if we needed help or had questions about the scheme.
We were given a great insight into the company culture. This was largely due to the direct interactions that we had with various employees, which allowed us to learn and understand their unique experiences. Besides being told about the companies values, it was refreshing to see how that manifested in day to day practice.
This experience was instrumental in helping decide to pursue law. The exposure it gave me to the varied and interesting work that solicitors do encouraged me to research the career in even greater depth. It was very exciting to learn and in turn be encouraged by members of the firm. I felt very encouraged and that this career would be a real possibility for me.
We were not paid for the experience as its purpose served to be more of an insight scheme rather than an internship. However, we were reimbursed in full for our travel costs and those that travelled far for the scheme were offered reimbursement for accommodation up to a certain amount.
There were ample opportunities for networking and meeting other employees. I appreciated the fact that there were several scheduled networking events in the itinerary and also the opportunity to continue those conversations with employees and future trainees with everyday over breakfast and lunch.
Yes
They are an extremely charismatic and inclusive firm of high calibre. They seek to invest in talent from the earliest stages and commit to enabling the development of those that they recognise potential in. Beyond this, it is incredibly valuable that the firm is so inclusive and actively seeks to remove barriers to entry to the profession.
Reach out to people within the firm or future trainees regarding your applications. Speaking to them will offer you extremely valuable insight into both the firm itself and also its culture. Knowledge of this is pivotal for interviews with the firm as you will build up a holistic view of the firm.
