  • My role is to complete tasks on site as a Civil Engineer. This includes, setting out, inspections, as-builts, surveying etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have managed to develop a lot of skills from previous experience including using equipment like the Leica GPS and a Digi Level. New skills include setting up and use of a total station and pratctical site skills (e.g. setting out for kerbs and paving).

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I've really enjoyed my experience on my placement and have loved facing different challenges.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My on site experience has been very well organised but the placement group project work could have been run a little smoother.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is plenty of support from different levels within the company and everyone was very helpful when I needed it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Plenty of check-in emails and a 'site visit' but maybe not enough personal contact.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My degree is more focused on design and consultancy however it has still helped me understand drawings and designs whilst on my site placement.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Plenty of opportunities to socialise but not many sports activities etc.

  • Yes

  • Very good company to work with and they make sure you get the most out of you placement in terms of experience and personal development.

  • Make sure you are enthusiastic about the industry and that you show interest in the history and more importantly the future of Balfour Beatty.
