  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A typical day within my role involves assessing engineering drawings to produce components and assemblies on both manual and CNC operated lathes and mills, as well as the use for welding and fabrication equipment. I also have the opportunity to take part in both scheduled and reactive maintenance tasks. In addition to this, I have been involved in the migration of the engineering workshop over to a new building, which has involved commissioning/decommissioning of equipment, planning activities, and purchasing of new equipment and storage options.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In this role I have learnt a range on hand fitting techniques, as well as the use and operation of CNC lathes, mills, welding, and fabrication equipment. I have also developed my problem solving skills and have improved on my soft skills, such as inter-team networking and planning and running meetings.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This was the first time this program was ran with my employer, and as such, I have experience many teething problems throughout the process. Given this, the issues have all been addressed over time, and my employer has provided a good, and consistent level of support throughout the apprenticeship program.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would describe the organisation/structure of the program as initially being poor. Primarily due to the training provider exaggerating what they would deliver, and then failing to deliver on even the core structure of the program. This was later rectified when moving to a new training provider, however this did result in a stressful experience at times.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The level of support from my employer has been significantly high throughout the program. If I required it, extra time was always allowed, and support from senior colleagues was available as needed. If any additional training was required, the company have supported this, and actioned it in a timely manner.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • From the initial training provider, NITAL, the delivery and support of the program was below poor. However since transferring to Tresham College, this has risen significantly enabling me to complete my program and achieve the gradings that I have been working towards. I believe that my experience would have been significantly better if the full program had been delivered at Tresham.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think that the qualification provided through my training provided enables me to perform better in my role by providing me with a broad, base-level, of understanding. This does exceed the level of training gained through my daily role, but covers areas that may not be met through my daily tasks.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, my workplace has a significant range of extra-curricula activates to get involved in. Some of these are free, such as football, rugby, outdoor calisthenics equipment, as well as some paid options such as gym, fitness classes, tennis and squash courts. There are also archaeological clubs, amateur dramatics, and choir.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company promotes a positive growth mindset and encourage all employees to progress and grow within the organisation. This does not always mean moving into management positions, but taking on higher levels or responsibility, and/or broadening the scope of your role. There is also a high level of benefits and support services that are available.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Unilever's Standards of Leadership play a large part in the organisation, and how the company operates. Interpret what each of these mean to you, and how you apply them in your day-to-day life. That doesn't mean all of them, but some, as we all have to start somewhere.
