My role involves managing Sub-Contractors on a live job. As well as this I negotiate contracts, agree final accounts and am now involved in bidding for work within the business. Bidding involves negotiating packages with Clients, agreeing sums, scopes and programme's in which we will go out to tender on.
I have obtained a HNC in Construction and now in year 3 of my Quantity Surveying Degree. University has improved my technical knowledge of construction. The apprenticeship scheme provides us with helpful internal training, this gives us knowledge of all areas of the business and not just to our job role. I've developed personal and business skills working on site, everyone is there to help and the door is always open for us to learn and develop.
The exposure I've been given during my time on the apprenticeship scheme is positive. The teams I've worked with has made work a healthy environment to work in and that is filtered throughout the whole company. I enjoy coming to work every day and look forward to the future.
The programme is very well split and I understand my role from a business, university and portfolio point of view. The support is always there from the talent and development team and they make you clear of your role within the company and always strive you to push on, It's a motivational programme.
Any team I've worked with whilst at Mace has always provided me with their fully support with all aspects of my work. My manager is always looking to develop me and give me exposure to all areas of the projects we work on. We are provided with a mentor who are always there to ask for advice.
I think University can sometimes feel distant from the topic of conversation when sitting down with the apprenticeship scheme. We have a general catch up on it but I think it would be good to gain an insight to how other apprentices are finding it. However they team do try to help guide us to that qualification.
I feel my employer and project work has improved me more in my job role rather than the training provider. I feel there's a more modern method now to how we operate rather than what we learn at University. There are some modules which do help but overall I think how it's presented by the training provider could be improved.
There are networking events held every quarter by the business and we are all encouraged to do a volunteering day within our project teams each year. The apprenticeship scheme also provide opportunity for us to raise money for a charitable cause within teams and always provide events for us to network.
Yes
It's a great company to work for with a well structured organisation. The teams you work with provide a good atmosphere to work in and are always there for advice. The apprenticeship scheme helps develop personal skills and allows you to expand your network and move to all areas of the business to learn.
I would say to apply with an open mind as they would be impressed with what areas of the business they could work in, as well as what avenues they could explore from a job role point of view. Mace is a company you can move into different sectors, different types of projects and different job roles if you ask, and that helps us as apprentices improve.
