  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • During this placements I attend different placements getting exposure of the different areas at National Grid. On a day to day basis currently I am carrying out changes to the IEMS which ensures the system is regularly updated for better accuracy to allow the grid to be managed efficiently and maintain compliance. Other tasks includes participating in work meetings, and under going regular training to ensure mine and others safety is maintained.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my understanding of the system and how it is managed. I have developed my skills using AutoCad as well as report writing when undertaking university. I have developed my excel skills by undertaking training. I have gained knowledge of SQL queries- (structured query language) and have been taught simple codes on how to write script to perform commands.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed my programme so far. I have gained valuable working experience with exposure to the power systems industry. I have additionally be given training covering all aspect of the business allow be to gain an all round understanding of National Grid and how it functions. Whilst also benefiting from the knowledge university has given me.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has been very well structured with clear view of the year ahead. The different topics such as University, Training and work placements were clearly highlighted and given a time period. It provided me with a clear direction and time frame enabling me to properly manage myself and manage the workload.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have recieved endless support from my manager and surrounding parties. I have had one to ones to ensure I'm kept happy and have been directed to the Employee Assistant Programme which can be used at all times for any of my needs. I have talked about my struggles and have been supported thoroughly with these.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot of support is provided by the training provider. Time off work to gain a qualification and access to contacts within the business that can provide additional support. I have just been granted additional study days ahead of exams for additional practice. I have been provided a laptop to allow me to receive training.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification and the role are part of the parcel. The business module at uni had exposed me to the business more and helped me network around the business to gain a deeper understanding. The work based project is also a significant piece of work that will allow me to perform better in my role. All the knowledge taken from training will all contribute to my success.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a social team which do lots of fun activities together which encourages mingling. Additionally the company hold events such as the birthday party and also free lunches and work dinners which everyone can get involved in. There is planned to be team building days which is an extra-curricular activities for everyone in the team to get involved in. Additionally there are site visits offered to apprentices to get exposure to the different sites.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel the apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge of the industry whilst also gaining a qualification as well as getting paid. The apprenticeship offers lots of exposure to all areas of the business whilst attending training and the different placements. National Grid is an integral part of the world we live in and it is great to be apart of its future.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Be open to everything that gets offered, be prepared for hard work and challenges. To be a sponge and try soak up as much knowledge and skills possible from everyone around. Try to network within the company as people vary in knowledge and skills and exposure to them with help with development.
