  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Assessing and managing subcontractor payments, submitting valuations to the client, communicating with subcontractors on site to make the financials easier, carrying out completion sheets for properties to compare with subcontractor applications, close communication with the site team to allow the project to run smoothly in all areas and to ensure project success

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to communicate professionally with subcontractors and to the client and how to negotiate to get something you want. I have attended university once a week and here got a greater understanding of the industry as a whole and from here i can link it to my role. Equans also hold mandatory training such as SHEQ to further my knowledge

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship due to the balance. I can work on site once a week and learn with the site team I attend university once a week and then I am in the office for 2 days usually and my role allows me to be flexible and work from home when I need to. I enjoy the people side of this role as it allows me to learn so many new things from different professionals in the industry

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The HR and learning team at Equans are excellent, they will always support your learning by holding reviews every few months and they organise events to meet and get to know other apprentices in the company. Sometimes it can be slow in terms of having things to do, but you appreciate this once it gets super busy.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From my experience I will always be supported when I need to be, it has been difficult with many people in the team leaving however my managers and mentors and just other people in the office for example will always be able to explain things to me when I ask.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider is difficult as there are around 200 people on my course and I am only there once a week, it is mostly due to me not asking enough questions from my side. I think if you want and seek for the support it is readily available to you. And every time I have had an issue it has been followed up.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My Training provider provides a very vague course. This has its benefits and drawbacks. I feel that in my role I can understand the specific details that are essential to my job as a QS and from my university I can gain a better understanding of the industry as a whole which will be essential in the future as it sets me up for whatever I chose to do.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I recently volunteered painting a job centre and gardening at a new school, Equans always have opportunities to volunteer and occasionally they do hold social activities to allow you to meet work colleagues in a non work based way. Also the Learning team always get you to engage in extra curricular activities outside of the office

  • 9a. Would you recommend Equans to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Equans to a friend as they encourage you to learn in a way that benefits you. They have many options for working in different roles to suit anybody's skills and overall they are just a large successful company that anyone would be proud to be a part of.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Equans?
  • I was employed through a group interview involving around 20 candidates and I would suggest to be inquisitive and confident but not over the top. Show who you are and how you think and just be confident in what you know and why you'd be good for the role.
