My role currently involves working in the capacity of project manager, which day to day involves managing teams, allocating and prioritizing output, being aware of possible issues and raising these, as well as attending sessions and workshops to help plan pathways for further programme work. It can be quite varied, but this is broadly what it involves.
I have learnt quite a few new skills within the role, primarily skills of management and bringing a team along with the overall aim. I have also gained an awareness of bigger picture thinking to be aware of possible issues and risks, and raising these as key conversations at appropriate discussion points.
I have really enjoyed the programme to date, and that would be partly down to the positive approach of the team I work within. My manager has been very supportive of both my apprenticeship degree, as well as my own development within the company. That culture is one which I have seen for others in different teams as well, so doesn't feel a unique experience.
The programme has been very well structured, with a clear division between work time and degree study. Despite unpredictability that can lie within the industry, I have had a very positive approach in that protected time for study has been kept to consistently, allowing to focus on consistent study. My team has also been supportive of my study, helping with essays and research where able.
My employer has been very supportive, both in terms of protected time as mentioned above, but also through focused support for projects, where managers have provided me with their perspective of theories which relate to the course content at the time. I am currently working on my final thesis, and my team have been very helpful in offering to be part of the research.
My training provider has been very good at supporting. On an ongoing basis, the course content was broadly engaging, and raised interesting new ideas and theories to consider and relate to my working life. Sessions scheduled were useful, but particularly so have been tutor sessions with my final thesis project. Having a contact to support the project has been invaluable.
I believe that my qualification enables me to perform better through a deeper understanding of management, how best to perform within the role, and consideration of alternative approaches. Before the course, I had a broad understanding of what management is, but the course has definitely consolidated this understanding and made me much more self-reflective.
There had been more social events and clubs available through my employer pre-covid, but understandably, these have reduced quite a lot since. Beforehand, colleagues could get involved in several sports, drama and others. I would be particularly surprised if these events don't restart quite soon and provide renewed chances to get involves socially.
Yes
I believe the opportunities provided at BA enable for a great degree of development at quite a rapid pace. From when I started, there has been a good level of responsibility within my role, and this has enabled me to develop confidence and skills at a much quicker pace. The supportive environment at BA is what helps to really push this forward.
I would advise anyone applying to my programme at BA to consider the skills needed for the role, rather than absolute direct transferable experience. My past experience was not close to aviation, but the skills I developed enabled me to perform well within the context of the role. Understanding what skills you have which are transferable and pitching those will serve well.
