  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Running a do it yourself retail mini warehouse. I am responsible for the health and safety of over 100 colleagues and over 4000 customers per week. Utilising my team to effectively operate the store, which has an annual turnover of £10 million. recruiting and growing talent for our store and the wider region.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whilst on the programme I have developed my existing coaching skills. I have learned coaching contracting, safe guarding, reflective journalism, the role of a coach, skills of an effective coach, unconditional positive regard, Goal setting, diversity and inclusion, communication and boundaries, limiting beliefs, theories of reflective learning and emotional intelligence

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the whole programme, it uses a variety of learning styles tailored to my needs. In addition I am also re taking my G.C.S.E. English. I am working with people from different functions and work environments. I have a focus of eight hours per week towards my personal growth

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is clearly laid out for the next two years, there is a schedule of Webinars in conjunction with a schedule of learning priorities. I have an Aptem account which I can clearly see my progress and liaise with my tutor if needed. All of my learing modules are on this platform and I can upload evidence at any time

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer allows me to complete all of this learning during works time. My line manager reviews my progress monthly and quarterly to ensure I am on track. If I need any additional time out of the business to work from home, I only need to ask and it is there.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My Tutor [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is available any time I need support. She is on the phone, email or I can use the Aptem platform to message her. We have a zoom call every four weeks, in which she checks in on my progress. During this she sanity checks my learning and provides me with additional thinking or reflection tasks for the next four weeks

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As someone that has worked his way up through the leadership ladder from a youth training scheme back in 1990 when I left school. I have not attained any formal qualification that I can hold my name to. The apprenticeship is providing me with a qualification that reflect all my years of learning.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I used volunteer at a local hospital for the mentally Ill. I support local food banks in my area and I am currently looking to use my coaching skills to help grow local charities. When I am not working, I look after my local footpaths and bridleways. I have a keen interest in gardening

  • Yes

  • For the last twelve years I have developed my career within B&Q. From day one, you are made to feel part of a family and not just a massive international operation. For anyone wishing to build a life as well as a career. B&Q is the place to be.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to B&Q?
  • Come with an open mind to learning. B&Q isn't just any retailer, we are complex in our operation and evolving all the time. Come with drive and passion. If you want to progress quickly, this is the place to be. You will need to demonstrate your energy levels.
