  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I rotate around different placements, all of which vary. I spend a lot of my time shadowing other engineers, waiting for a phone call for a fault to attend to and then seeing how they fix it, or working on long term projects e.g. soldering. I also sometimes work shifts - long days and weekends.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • For sure! Soldering and using electronic equipment is all quite new to me and I am improving with that. Even just being in such a busy environment I feel my people skills, prioritization and social skills are getting better. You get lots of hands on time with equipment which is fun to learn!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I greatly do. Everyday is different and I love the busy environment of the office. The team around me are so friendly and supportive and I feel able to ask questions or ask them to explain things to me again and they happily do. The days can feel long sometimes but I think thats with any job!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The induction process was brilliant, I didn't feel overwhelmed at all as it was done at the right pace - as starting a job can be really scary! There is ongoing training which is great and very often we have meetings with our managers who are happy to discuss any concerns.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Loads! Pretty much every week I have a meeting with someone who is looking for ways to improve my experience. If I have any problems people are happy to listen and try and help. Also, on placement you are often partnered with a mentor which I really like - having someone to go to when in a new environment really helps!

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • It varies. Generally it is very good however not as good as the BBC communication and training. However the learning is great and the general attitude is very good. There is always someone to talk to with any problems that arise and they are friendly and supportive all the time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I would say they go hand in hand really well. Something comes up in the workplace that I am not sure of, and then I get taught about it from my training provider. It clears it up but then when I go back to my job that's when I feel I really cement my knowledge so that whole process I find it really good.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Because of covid obviously there have been some limitations but they have made the best of the situation with lots of zoom events and clubs to join. There is an excellent support network for new starters and also depending on your course a group for that which has lots of fun zooms to meet people with :)

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall it's a super place because it is very exciting and always things happening. The support is great and training is ongoing so you can always look to the future. The people I have met have all been really friendly and always happy to help in any way they can

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Don't give up! Sometimes things take time but it will happen when it is right for you! Remember the staff members want you to do well so don't feel intimidated by them and everyone is so lovely so don't be too nervous. Write down any experience that you think is relevant and be confident in yourself.
