  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I raise permits which are a legal document we need to ensure we can carry out works and I make sure all permits are accurate and correct as they can cause FPNs which are then marked against the contract. Without these permits, we are not able to complete the works that we need. I also create TTROs and Diversion Routes for all road closures and converse with our customers to ensure that these are correct, and done within the correct lead in period. I am also responsible for answering the customer telephone. This is where members of the public can call us about any roadworks with queries, complaints or compliments. I have to ensure that their queries do get answered and they are satisfied with these answers.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a range of skills including my confidence. This is because I have been challenged to get out of my comfort zone and speak to a range of different people, internally like employees and higher levels of management and also externally with clients and customers. I have also gained a lot of resilience and have learnt how to approach situations in different ways which keeps motivation high and a positive work environment. I have also developed teamwork and leadership skills through working in the office and also through the Brathay Challenge and DofE. I have also developed my time management skills by setting to do lists and deadlines.

  • I have enjoyed my apprenticeship a lot as I have had amazing experiences through the opportunities I have been given. I have met a range of employees throughout Balfour Beatty and it has been interesting to learn about different areas in BB. I enjoy working with my team and this apprenticeship has given me the chance to get a bigger understanding of the working life. I am looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and moving on to bigger opportunities

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I was given a really good induction when I first arrived and was given a lot of training and support throughout. My line manager and my colleagues have supported me throughout, especially since they understand that this has been my first real job. I had monthly meetings with my mentor who was able to guide me throughout as well.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a lot of support throughout my apprenticeship from my colleagues, my line manager, my mentor etc. When I did have any problems, whether personal or work, I was able to speak freely without feeling looked upon. My problems were solved and I was able to keep on working. I feel there is a positive attitude in making sure that all employees are supported.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider was incredibly supportive throughout and I was able to complete my college course with distinctions. Again, whenever I had any problems or was feeling stressed, my tutor was able to accommodate and support me. They have been incredible with supporting me and always positive with me. They were always available to speak to, whether through emails or on the phone

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My college course helped me to perform better in my role. I was able to look into the organisation and learn it all including the different level of managements and what structure type it is. Furthermore, I was able to link my role with my college work and look further in my role and how I have an impact on the company. I learnt a range of different skills like leadership and how to be a project manager which I will be able to take with me into the future.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Personally, I think it is a great company with so many different job opportunities. You learn so much and get to take part in a range of different experiences like DofE, the Brathay Challenge, volunteering days, different courses. Everyone is supportive and it is a great chance to develop your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • Don't be afraid to reach out and speak to others. It can be very stressful as with any work but there will always be someone there to help whether it is a colleague or an employee or the support teams. If you are completing college or uni courses, remember to find a working balance that fits you. Communicate with your line manager and just say yes to as many different opportunities as you can
