I work as part of a project team to deliver highway designs to our clients. I spend a lot of time producing design models and producing CAD drawings. I spend a few days a week on a live highway construction site to provide support to our contract partners. I also spend some time in document control, via the use of software such as Viewpoint for Projects and ProjectWise.
Learned multiple new skills. I have learned how to use different design software such as AutoCAD, Civil3D and Vehicle Tracking. I have also learned how to use common data environment software such as ProjectWise and SharePoint. My communication, presentation and report writing skills have also greatly improved during my apprenticeship.
I enjoy my apprenticeship. I like that I get to spend 4 days working in a real engineering environment as well as spending 1 day per week studying to obtain a degree which will benefit me in future. I get along well with all of my colleagues and enjoy getting up for work in the morning.
Overall I think the programme is well structured in regards to time spent training/working. However I think it could be better if I was able to spend a year or so in each different department to get a taste of the different disciplines in civil engineering. I think this would be more beneficial.
I receive lots of support from my employer. Everyone I work with is always open to answer questions and my employer has also supported me through numerous qualifications with the ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers). My employer also checks in on my university progress and makes sure I am undertaking work which is benefitting me and my learning.
My training provider (LJMU) provides plenty of support to obtain my degree. My lecturers are all very good and always available to speak to should I have any questions about work or my degree. They also make us aware of the qualifications we should be chasing with the ICE and provide support for this also.
My civil engineering degree teaches me about multiple topics in the field of civil engineering which helps me in the workplace. But because I only work in highways the entire degree syllabus isnt all completely relevant to my job role. However I do feel it gives me a base understanding of many civil engineering topics.
Yes, there are several activites to get involved in. There are things like 5-a-side football events, golfing days etc. There are also several social activities organised like hiking or trekking, or going out as a team for food and drink. I feel as though in Arcadis everyone is keen to socialise as much as possible.
Yes
Arcadis are a good company who do interesting and rewarding work. The offices are all very friendly and work-friendly environments with excellent facilities. I am happy with the support I have been provided from the beginning and have full intentions of staying with Arcadis after my degree has been completed.
Try and fill your application with any experience which could be relevant to the job role. Show a keen interest in whichever role you are applying for. Discuss what you do in your own time and anything extra curricular which could benefit your application. Have an awareness of inclusivity/digitialisation/sustainability.
