During our first year on the retail scheme we spend 12 weeks getting to know the store and being given a brief overview to how each department operates. We then go into a team leader role where we begin to gain deeper knowledge of being a manager in retail. I work on the Amazon department so my daily tasks are completing inventory walks, leading a large team to ensure all metrics are met, completing various tasks throughout the day to ensure the team is running smoothly.
The main skill I have developed during my time on the course is my leadership skills. Morrisons provides us with plenty of resources and online training courses to help us build are professional development skills and this is something we have to work on each month and is monitored by our scheme leaders.
I enjoy the freedom to be able to direct my learning to an area which interests me, there is a to of choices to make and you will rarely find yourself doing something you won't enjoy as you can simply as to change to something more suitable for yourself.
The structure was set in place from when I first started the scheme however I quickly realised it was quite slow paced however I found if you prove yourself capable then you can easily be given more challenges and responsibility if you ask for it. I think each individual learns at a different pace.
The support I receive from the store manager and HR manager is amazing and early careers and our scheme leaders at Morrisons are always willing to help with various ways to contact them and also they arrange visits for us all to go head office which provides us great opportunities to discuss any worries in person.
In-between our week long block sessions at the university the lectures always arrange drop in video calls where we can ask any questions and also [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who is in charge of the course at the university is so helpful and always there for us 24/7 looking after both our university work but also our well-being when we are away from our families at university. Any issues regarding literally anything she is happy to help with,
we recently did a human resource management module and everything we learnt during the week was so helpful and knowledge we can use in our day to day lives however some modules like accounting I find a bit pointless and I don't see why I need to know that to be a retail manager.
not that im aware off however there might be on different schemes such as the corporate one. in terms of retail the only thing I can think of is helping your in store community champion with charity work but this will be done in your own time not works time
Yes
The scheme has allowed me to learn so many new skills and build confidence to achieve things I didn't think was possible and I'm only 1 year into the scheme. Not only has it improved my work life but I have met the most amazing friends through our university weeks, would highly recommend.
Be as confident as possible and really show your enthusiasm towards the company. Ive found passion for your work is something the company loves to see and celebrate. also don't be afraid to show personality as individuality is what they look for especially in degree apprentices they are going to hire
