  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role changes depending on the project that I am assigned. Sometimes I'm on-site and conduct inspections which I then write up in the office. Most recently I am doing design work for a new bridge. I am using software to analyse the load capacity and altering the design.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I very much enjoy my program at university. The lecturers provide excellent information which i then use in my work. It is a massive benefit to work and study, as I can also ask my colleagues for a real world perspective. The apprenticeship lead at the university looks out for my best interests.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is organised very well. Changes are communicated very quickly. Due to Covid, all lectures were moved to online teaching. The lecturers adapted very well to teaching the lecture material and helping during tutorials. They also demonstrated the lab work well as we couldn't go in physically to the labs.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer. I just have to make sure to ask. During term time, my schedule gets a little hectic due to the pressures of studying for exams and working. As long as i make it clear to them, they understand and compromise a little.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is very good. The apprenticeship lead from the university looks out for my best interests. We have tripartite meetings quarterly between myself, work, and the university that tracks my progress. It is also a time where i can discuss if i need any extra help from either party.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In my first years, it wasn't too helpful but I understand as this is the foundation knowledge that will be used in later years. Since then, the modules I have studied have been very relevant as they directly coincide with what i'm doing at work; like using Eurocodes to help design a bridge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I get involved with extra lectures provided by the ICE. As a civil engineering student, I am signed up with the Institute of Civil Engineers, and they provide extra events like networking socials or lectures to increase my exposure in the field. I am encouraged by work and university to attend these.
