  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current role within Cummins is that I am a technical apprentice. This job role is great as I get to work with a range of experienced technicians and skilled engineers during my 6 week rotations. My rotations give me great knowledge as I get to experience work within a range of manufacturing engineering departments which will give me different projects for example these can be CAD projects. I also get rotations within the quality departments which gives me great knowledge on the shop floor and how quality can effect the engines being built.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting at Cummins I have gained a range of new skills. One of the main skills which I have learnt can be engine knowledge as before joining Cummins I had very minimal experience with engines so now my engine knowledge has improved massively. I have also learnt how to use a range of different CAD software's which are used within the company, knowing how to use these software's is great as it can help with the rotations which I will continue to go through. Everyday at work I am learning new skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The apprenticeship program is really well structured with a clear timetable of what department each apprentice will be working in. I enjoy working my way through the different rotations as I meet many different knowledgeable engineers so while working with them I ask as many questions as possible in order to retain as much knowledge as possible. Overall the apprenticeship programme is very well structured and I find that there is always a job for me to complete.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Personally I find that the apprenticeship is well structured with clear timetables given to you stating what departments you will be working in. I also attend college which is where I am currently completing my HNC in manufacturing engineering, college days are always well structured too making sure there is a fair amount of work given to the apprentice. The structure overall is very clear and I always have work to do within departments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I find that there is always support throughout the apprenticeship, each year group has their own mentor which is there to support you and help you if needed. I have found that my mentor has been very supportive if I have needed help. I also find anyone within the workplace very approachable if help is required so I have never struggled to get support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am currently studying my HNC in manufacturing engineering which I am currently in my 2nd year. Cummins have funded me to go through this course which I am very thankful for as this qualification can help me rotate through the workplace. As of September I will be starting my HND, this qualification will be a step up from HNC but I am prepared for the challenge. I have found work to be very understanding when I have high amounts of College work and always understand if I need to complete an assignment.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am currently studying a HNC in manufacturing engineering at the minute, this course was chosen for me as I am a technical apprentice. I find that a fair few of the different techniques which I have learnt at college are used within work for example the 8 wastes. Overall as it is a manufacturing engineering course majority of the different modules which I have learnt translate into my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am aware that Cummins have their own football team but I am not part of this. There is a lot of different opportunities which Cummins offer such as volunteering to help the local area. Cummins are approached with different volunteering projects and there is always great encouragement to help the local area.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Cummins to anyone, not just a friend. The reason for this is because I have found my experience great so far learning a range of different skills. I have worked with some very knowledgeable engineers who have managed to pass their skills onto me which I will continue to use throughout my Cummins career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • I would personally say there is a few different features which Cummins look for. One of the main features I would say is to be a good team worker as during any rotation within Cummins you will find yourself working within a team so being able to have good communication skills but also good ideas can help massively within the company.
