  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • 7/10

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The programme at BT is quite varied, with opportunities to try a variety of roles in a number of different departments. This ensures you get a comprehensive overview of how networks operate and the service provided to our customers. I have also developed interpersonal skills, through presenting to my team and talking to clients over the phone.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it a lot, although there is a lot of discontent within the company at the moment. Some works are striking over low pay increases and this creates a negative atmosphere. However, I enjoy my role and the opportunities I have to learn while being on the job is amazing.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a rigid structure in place throughout the apprenticeship and there are plenty of people available to help you should you struggle at all throughout the apprenticeship. I am aware of all the things required to be completed before my apprenticeship concludes and BT has the support infrastructure in place.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I know if I have any problems or questions then I can receive help and support. I am concerned that the senior managers within the company do not value their employees and this is due to the recent strike action. The BT CEO took a 32% payrise while others are forced to use food banks. This makes me feel uneasy about the future.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I get plenty of time to study for my exams and complete my study programme, which supports my roles at BT. I also know that former apprentices have been given opportunities to continue learning beyond their apprenticeships and gain additional qualifications. This makes me feel valued and confident that the company will invest in talent.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Very well. I feel like I can apply the skills that I pick up throughout my study programme in my day to day work. I also feel like my daily role supports me in my assignments. This is a mutually beneficial experience and I think BT has this aspect perfected.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a number of things I can participate in in addition to my apprenticeship. I can volunteer and share my passion for technology with the next generation of potential apprenticeship applicants. We get a maximum of three volunteer days per year, which can be used to help the local community. There are also annual events including sports day, which are great for team building.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are lots of opportunities to learn throughout an apprenticeship with BT and the company is keen to invest in talent and learning resources. However, is not perfect and there are a lot of unhappy workers who feel like they have not been heard, which doesn’t bode well for the future.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Go into BT with an open mind. Be prepared to learn. Be prepared to push yourself out of your comfort zone. BT will help you to reach your potential, but it might not be a viable long-term career option if you are seeking to earn a decent salary in the future.
