  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is mostly site based at the time being visiting multiple sites within my sector. I spend time with the team on site ensuring standards and policies are being kept up. I also carry out bespoke inspections including housekeeping and waste management, electrical and fire ect. These are published to a reporting system which can be accessed by any managers and subcontractors also on this same project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication skills as well as my confidence as each day I interact with new operative and new members of the site workforce. I have developed my knowledge of construction in general as well as health and safety knowledge as I work day to day with construction managers who have each been in the industry for varied lengths of times giving me a wide exposure to different methods.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship so far and I look forward to seeing where it takes me in the future. I was welcomed into Mace and settled in well. I also settled into my online college sessions well too further developing my knowledge and making it applicable at work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship programme consists of 2 years. It has been organised so that I will spend 4 sets of 6 months in different areas of the business so that I get a wide exposure to the whole of Mace. I study college online once a month followed with a few assignments to complete before the next session. Although I only attend college once a month, my training provider requires that I dedicate and log 6 hours of off-the-job (OTJ) each week.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider are willing to help when you reach out to them however can sometimes take a little longer than anticipated for them to reply and are not overly encouraging when it comes to reaching out for check ins and providing dates in adequate time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As an apprentice completely new to the job role and having no experience in the sector, my training provider helps to aid my knowledge in my day to day role. I find that I also learn just as much significant skills and knowledge while being in my workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Mace to a friend as it has some great career opportunities as well as having a large positive brand image all while being a responsible business within the construction industry. It provides you with the support services you need and has people available to help when need be whether its your line manager, the emerging talent team or just a friendly fellow colleague.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Ensure to enjoy the job you do and throw yourself completely into the role even if it puts you out of your comfort zone. This way you will get the most out of the apprenticeship scheme and learn more skills. The apprenticeship also helped to boost my confidence and communication skills by being fully immersed into the role and meeting so many new people.
