My role as an automation Engineer involves introducing new ways in which manual processes can be carried out using technology to help create a more efficient workplace. The role alters between working on new upcoming technology, providing key support to other departments and introducing new kit for scientists to use.
So far in the little time I have been here I have greatly progressed. I have started learning how each department works and the skills required to work with the technology used. Through attending university and learning from my co-workers I have been able to progress my coding.
I am very glad I decided to take the apprenticeship route, I have found this route to be very beneficial towards my own learning, teaching me something new every day. Not only is the work interesting and different every day but its also very flexible, allowing me to spend time on projects while also allowing me to try out work in other departments, e.g lab work.
My line of work can often be very busy, as its based on fixing failed technology or methods. For a small team they have been able to manage both mentorship and managing such a busy environment well, being able to make the most out of sudden changes in schedule in order to better my learning. My University has also been incredibly refreshing, as the majority of it is online, everything has been explained well and the transition from school to university has been smooth.
The support I have gained so far has been great, Iv had regular feedback to help me better myself and my work. My employer has helped through providing training and all the information I would need in order to settle in. My team has ensured that they provide a way to better how I learn through asking for my own personal learning style and then applying that to situations while also providing a challenge.
My University has provided us with the time and information needed in order to complete our coursework. We have been given multiple contacts and guides if we ever require support or wish for extra tutoring. They University has helped by setting up quarterly reviews to set goals, necessary for my own improvement, while also ensuring I am confident and happy with the work given to me.
I believe that my course directly corresponds with my role. So far the course has supplied me with both context through a Business Fundamentals course and skills through a Computer Science and Programming course, helping me develop the skills and mindset to help me with future coding and planning.
There are many different communities within AstraZeneca which can be found on the companies workplace, these range from different hobbies to cultures or work groups allowing you to meet many different people. The apprentice's are encouraged to get involved with as many of the events hosted by them while also motivating them to host their own events, whether its a business fair or group meal.
Yes
I would greatly recommend AstraZeneca as a company to work for, the company is incredibly rewarding both through offering an incredibly positive experience but also through the overall outcome of your work, having real world effects that help others. The overall community and work ethic within AstraZeneca is very positive, with plenty of opportunity to get involved or hear about what others are working on. AstraZeneca is the perfect company to work for if you like something new every day.
When applying to AstraZeneca my advice is to be up to a challenge, the overall attitude within AstraZeneca is very upbeat and open to new things. When applying try to keep concise and to the point while also ensuring you get across your key points. At the core of the company is its values, try to research these and apply them to yourself. Most importantly during interviews or online assessments try to be yourself and be genuinely interested in the role, bringing up past examples of work or even examples from presentations or facts explained in the interviews helps a lot.
