Within the retail environment, I look after a team of people that provide a service to the public & the trade. My job role includes training staff to a high standard, and making sure they are following company protocol and procedures correctly. Giving feedback as I go and having more responsibilities.
Yes- learnt a lot around motivation and how it can impact not only yourself but the team around you. I also learnt a lot about processes within the company that I wasn't too sure on. Completing my apprenticeship has also given me the confidence that I am good at my job and helped me improve things on a personal level and professional level.
The programme was very thorough and was tough to squeeze enough training in initially, but once I found that balance between home life and work it became the norm and I was able to accomplish what I set out to do. It was difficult because the job I am in requires a lot of attention, so I had to do a lot of home working; but I wanted to achieve it so I put my mind to it; but enjoyed the experience for sure.
Very well organised. I knew exactly what was required of me ahead of every meeting that we had every 4-6 weeks. With the training portal it was very handy as I could see my progress and see what I had left to do. The instructor was very organised too and helped me along the way up to and including my end point assessment.
I'll admit not as much as I wanted; hence I had to do a lot of it in my own time. But depending on what shift I was on, I could plan my day around it and get an hour or so to get away from the shop floor and crack on with some work. Alternatively I did a lot at home.
The training provider was very helpful; the instructor themselves gave me their mobile number and any queries I would have I would message him or email him and he would reassure me about something; whether it be if I was stuck or if I had an issue completing something in time etc.
100% it has helped me within my role. People have asked me if it is worth it, and I genuinely believe it has helped me within the job I was already in. I wanted to achieve it, put my mind to it and completed it with a distinction. It has made me feel a lot more confident with matters I wasn't too sure on; and affirmed the things I was doing already is correct.
In regards sports teams, not really no, I think they used to do it a few years ago but not now. But social activities, to a degree yes. We have had social gatherings after work to celebrate before; which is always nice and keeps relationships healthy and helps motivate the team.
Yes
It is a genuinely great place to work. I know from leaving and coming back to B&Q that the grass isn't always greener elsewhere. The holidays are fantastic; we get 6.6 weeks a year compared to some places where it is 28 days. The people make up the experience a lot, they are a fantastic bunch and can help pick you up when you're down.
Just be yourself; B&Q is a very accepting company when it comes to diversity and they have great teams working for them. If you're prepared to put the work in; then you can go far within B&Q. They have great chances of promotion; it's there if you want it, but like I say you have to work for it.
