day to day i work within the resource to team and manage the ongoing development of the Resource Management System, i have presented this to a variety of other departments and delivered sessions to high level people within the business, i also get involved in engineer intakes, competency profile audits for our engineer and above population and a variety of other business tasks which give me exposure to the manager role
since joining Balfours i have been put forward for many different challenging tasks, however these have only helped me, my confidence has improved massively due to having to talk/present infront of large groups of people, my communication skills have improved and i feel like i can manage my time much better and understand how to prioritise my workload, something i didnt have to do at my previous job
I enjoy the apprenticeship programme, although completing it alongside a full time job is difficult at times, the programme is very rewarding and has allowed me to meet a large number of people from different areas of the buisness that i wouldnt usually interact with, and also i have met people from other companies when out at uni which is nice as they are going through the same process as me
i feel majority of the time the programme is well structured, there has been the odd occasion things have been missed and information wasn't clear but overall the programme is very organised and there are regular touchpoints throughout the year where you can talk to the apprenticeship leads to learn more or get involved with new things
i feel i get a lot of support from my employer with my degree, but more importantly from my team, they are always asking questions and asking how's they can help, pointing me in the right direction of people that work within the specific department my assignment is relative too. Balfours as a whole are very invested in their emergent talent employees
Derby University are very helpful. each module lead i have had are also on hand to answer questions, the in person teaching sessions are always engaging and informative and no question is to much to ask, then after sessions each lead is always setting up drop in sessions where we can ask further questions and send drafts of work etc
my qualification is really helping me in aspects of my role, the modules i have completed are about different areas of the business so this has allowed me to form a relationship with a wider number of colleagues and make better connections that benefit me at work. it's also made me more knowledgeable about certain areas and has allowed me to get involved in some more managerial level activities
i work as part of the events team on the side of my normal job, this has helped me to plan and attend several different social events during the year which again helps to meet new people from site, we also have bi monthly football games that all the different teams get involved in and others can watch too. there is a large social following at work
Yes
i would recommend Balfour Beatty as an employer because they offer a good map of progression, there are alot of opportunities to progress and develop your career, there are also courses they can put you on. its a fun and sociable place to work and all colleagues are helpful and driven towards the same goal. Balfours offer a lot in return for your hard work
tips i would give to others applying for a role here would be to look wider then your closest location, if your willing to travel here are so many opportunities across the UK, also if you feel as though your a not strong in a particular field, for example IT, there are so many chances to join courses etc to further your development so you feel stronger in areas required for your role
